Ok so i went to straithfield and a couple of car audio shops and they all wanted $300 to install my monitor, even though i have run all the cables, something about them not being able to guarantee there work with someone else s wiring..
Anyway.... i am now considering at having a crack at this myself, but i DO NOT want to screw it up lol, is it worth waiting for the pros to do, or is it a simple task to mount a monitor in my vt
depends how confident you are with the wiring, and if you can follow the diagrams. The hardest part sounds like the actual mounting of the monitor on the roof (i assume this is where you are placing it?).
The most critical thing I would be worried about is making sure you have good gauge wire for the power, anything to small wont carry enough current and could potentially fry.. but I doubt this screen would use much current anyway, If I was doing it i'd spend $5 more on some nice guage power wire, of and of course make sure you have so good quality RCA cables to whatever your source device is.
that is total bull****, if they cannot garentee it because of someone elses wiring, then they cant garentee it whether it be $100 or $10,000 to install. why would charging you more help garentee their work. so tell them to go screw themselves and find a place that will do it. garys car audio should do it.
Yeah i am confident with the wiring, just didn't want to start chopping holes in my roof without any previous experience. As soon as the guy told me they cant drop the price when its already wired up i asked if i could have it installed with no warranty, the answer was $300 or nothing still. Where is this "gary's" place?
Gary's Car Radio & Airconditioning Pty Ltd: citysearch
Garys Car Radio. (There are a few arround, I'd check white pages.) Infact if i was you I'd ring arround and tell them how much you have been quoted and see if anyone can do better.
I would say have a crack at it your self, but I have never done this before either. There should be a support piller running alone the middle that you should be able to mount the screen to, basically screw ontop of the exsisting roof lining into the piller, but not through the roof, and pull the wires out near your current courtsey light.
Maybe someone has photos of their roof lineing removed so you can understand where you could possibly mount the screen. then worry about where to pull the wiring to/what type of fixtures to use.
This is in a VS but I assume they would be about the same:
The monitor came with a mounting plate that goes above the headlining. I drilled holes in this to line up with the interior light mount (which is glued on so I used a bunch of liquid nails to strengthen it). Then the plate bolts to the roof using the standard light screws, and the moniter to the plate. I cut a hole in the headlining so that I could find the screws once it was in place.
Attached are a couple photos that might help, but I didnt take many of the steps

I did mine with no previous experience and didn't have any real problems. Probably helps to have an extra set of hands at a couple points though

Thanks for all the help guys, that idea about screwing into the existing centre light holes is a good idea, i think il have really good look at it on the weekend, doesnt anyone have some instructions of how to remove the roof liner? or is it just a matter of yanking off all the surrounding plastic trim
HOW TO replace headlining - Very detailed
That pretty well explains how to pull it out (again in a VR/VS) but as you said, it is basically a case of unscrewing everything on the roof and yanking it off the trim...well maybe not yanking, but you get the idea
