Hi all,
Seeing as how I'm learning how to service my car.... I want to buy some ramps so I can actually get under there (first thing I want to do is service the transmission).
What sort of load-rating do I need to get? I know places like supercheap have those $30 ones during the sales, but I'm guessing these aren't strong enough?
My car is a standard executive pov-pack VXII V6... (not that it really makes much difference, I guess they all are a similar weight).
i use these bigger red ones from repco, 90 for the pair i think not sure.
supercheap probly has them 2.
take off the front bar and up i go.
Hmmmm I'll check them out - woah you have to remove the front bar though? Damn, I didn't consider that...
not hard mate, something like 7 screws.
you might not have to, is your car lowered?
my ss front bar would get caught if i tried to go up.
also i think these ramps are for 4wd's or something so on the angl it'd go up on i'd have no chance of making it up with front bar on.
you can also jack the car up and slide them under, or put a piece of timber in front so the angle isn't so severe.
Personally I prefer to put them under the rear and use stands at the front.

"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."
also something i just thought of.
wat size wheels do you have?
i got the bigger ramps coz of my 19's, they were too wide for the smaller ramps.
these ones were much wider
It's a stock exec, with the stock bar - not lowered. It's my "sh*tbox", but I want to keep it running for as long as possible.
My tyres aren't normal though, I have 15"x7" alloys and run 225 wide tyres.... not quite as wide as your 19's.
That timber trick sounds like it just might work, so I'll give that a try first...
So, the general idea is to get the more sturdy ones for about $90 rather than the smaller ones for $60? (or if they're not $90, I'll just wait for the next sales... it's almost christmas, so no doubt there will be sales soon).
Yeah I got some 4wd ramps for my VT because the 235 tyres wouldn't fit on my old ramp (hey it was for a Corolla). They were a little under $100 I think, and are built like a brick ****house.
Stock exec should get up no worries, if you have a sports kit (factory or aftermarket) you'll almost certainly need to take the bar off, or sometimes you can get away with some wood chocks to give it a leg up.
i bought some ramps for my SS and the bar hits so i just welded some angle iron and made the approach angle lower works great non of this removing the front bar ****. You can get ramps for low approach angle cars but they don't raise the vehicle all that high and are more expensive cause it's made from pressed one piece steel not angle iron welded.
As previous posts said, buy a pair of four wheel drive ramps (the red ones). I found that the cheaper ones would always slide forward when you were trying to get the front on the ramps (rearwards was OK). You also need to purchase some timber strips to get the front and rear of lower cars onto the ramps without damage. I purchased two strips, modified one end of each to provide a progressive ramp-up on one end and slotted the other end to fasten onto the ramps securely (to the third cross bit). Works like a charm but you need to be careful to line the car up properly as the edges of the four wheel drive ramps are quite vertical and could damage your tyres.
I 2nd thatI've got king lows on my VT with standard bar but without the timber strips i cant get up on my ramps.timber works perfect
