    Angry Aerial issues

This is the most annoying thing out..

when the aerial stops going down or up as far as it can go.. it tries to keep on going.. and makes a very annoying clicking/clunking noise.. anyone know how to fix it or do i have to get a mechanic to fix it?

    thanking you in advance :P

shoot wd40 or rp7 all over the mast, it should fix it up, it just means a couple of the sections dont expand properly.

mine doesnt expand about 3-4 sections which makes it a perfect height I hate reallly tall antennas, so I put up with the clunking when it goes in

sounds like the last tooth on the plastic ribbon//extender//retractor has worn out... you can get replacements for about $40 from Supercheap/Autobarn//Holden//etc. (comes with shiny new arial and the plastic ribbon//extender//retractor thingy)

I don't think it's the bend that is the issue unless the bend is major. Mine doesn the exact same thing as you describe. Aerial doesn't quite go all the way up and makes that clicking sound, but I just live with it.

Picked one up for my VS today. They sell at supercheap for $149 but I got it a bit cheaper (thanks RACV). It looks like itll be a pain to fit so I'll see if I can get a mate to give me a hand some time in the next few days

That price includes the motor and mast, but they had ones to suit other cars for much cheaper. No idea why commodore ones are so expensive.
I'll post up here when I get it in. Just might not be for a few days. I've lived with it for the last few months, I'm sure a few more days won't hurt

$149 for a new aerial is bloody expensive. When I had to replace mine on my VX, I went around toall the stores (WOW, Autobarn, Supercheap, etc) they all wanted $120-$150. So I checked with Holden and they only charged about $90 for a brand new one for a VY which is exactly the same.

Was a bit hard to put in, but not too much. About 1.5 hours if your brother keeps giving you bad and unwanted advice.

Just remove the wheel, take out the guard and all the parts are right there for you. You will also have to move the ECU out of the way to get to the connectors. But all together not too hard. The kind of job a few drinks go well with.

    Thanks for that info.
I think I ended up paying about $120 so it looks like I still paid a bit much. Oh well, thats what I get for being in a hurry and not looking around.

I was quite surprised when Holden came back with a cheaper price on the genuine goods, than places with aftermarket goods. What the hells the point of aftermarket goods that cost more.

I really doubt this would come under used car warranty, but have a look into it anyway.

What's wrong with giving the bent sections a bit of a bend the other way to straighten it? Easily done with care, a squirt of WD40 and it should be all good again.

I doubt they would replace it under warranty as well, but it's always worth a shot.

I spent ages straightening mine up, and it looks just about perfect but still doesn't work. The mast is fairly strong, and the motor doesn't have the guts to straighten in as it all collapses inside itself.
And of course if you bend it too far it doesnt take much before it gets weak and breaks

Installed the Aerpro one this afternoon. The mounts on the new aerial were different to the standard one, so I couldn't use the original bracket or hole, but I was able to bend the crap out of the bracket that came with the new unit and squeeze a drill in there to make a new hole.

    Aerial issues-08122008105.jpg Aerial issues-08122008117.jpg

Wiring and everything like that was pretty simple, just plug and play.

The motor on this unit is a bit noisier than the original, but at least it goes all the way up and down now.

For anyone else doing this, using a genuine unit would make it 10x easier, but it isn't overly complicated, just fiddly.

If anyone wants I can try writing up a bit of a how-to or just put up some pics, but I'm sure there are better ways to do it than what I did.
