have just changed the water pump on my vt 5 litre and i am having problems getting the bolts back in they wont grab the thread 2 wont go in at all and the 3rd will go in most of the way then just stop and spin on the spot
anyone who could give me some ideas please would be greatly appreciated
cheers Brent
Dude The bolts are different lengths are putting the right ones in the right holes..
Why is it called Alcoholics Anonymous when the first thing you do is stand up and say, 'My name is Ray, and I am an alcoholic'?
yep there all in the right holes i marked each one when i pulled it off so i new which hole it went into
come on fellas
Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaassssssssseeeeeeee hhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllpppppppp !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it the correct pump? Maybe the casting of the base area is thicker than the original pump and hence the bolts are now not long enough to reach the threads, I would have a good look at both pumps and compare them very carefully, sounds like they may be slightly different.
^ sounds feasible.
Can you actually put the bolts back in with out the pump attached to see that the thread is all there etc and see how much distance is left between the block and the head of the bolt when first engaging the thread.
not to mention checking that the threads are not gummed up with crud. sometimes when removing the bolts in the first place, they can collect crud, which hardens if left on (depending on who used what putting on your last water pump).
pump is exactly the same i have all the bolts in now except 2 wont go in any further and they wont come back out there just spinning on the spot any ideas on how to get it the rest of the way in??
It sounds like the thread is stripped, either on the bolts or the holes they go into. If it is the bolts you might get away with new bolts and and re-tapping the threaded holes. If it's not the bolts that are stripped then you will probably have to make a new thread the next size up and get new bolts to suit.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
how easy is that to do and wat does it involve???
The timing case cover on the 5 litre, which is the front part of the motor where the water pump attached, is alloy. Thne thread in the timing case cover will be stripped in both holes because the alloy is softer than the bolts.
If you are not familiar with the process, and it needs to be handled VERY carefully, you should have the job done by a qualified person. The holes have specified depths - go too deep and you will drill through the cover into the timing chain area, putting alloy swarf (drilling chips) where it isn't wanted.
Its fiddly and needs to be done with extreme care, but is quite simple for someone who has the necessary experience.
