possible fuel troubles?

I have a 98 Vt, today we were driveing on low fuel almost empty up a hill and i went to put my foot down and the engine shuttered and conked out. Got towed to the top of the hill and put fuel in it thinking it had run out, but now when we start the car it starts ok and idels fine but as soon as you touch the accelerater it shutters and conks out.
Any ideas on what this might be ?

you've either picked up a bit of crap off the bottom of the tank, or you're just out of fuel

if we have a blockage in the fuel line would it still idle?

Sounds like a blocked fuel filter. The fuel system has both pressure and flow. At idle you may have ok pressure and flow but when you hit it the flow and pressure will be affected due to the crap from the tank blocking up your fuel filter. Put a new filter on.
