it still amazes me that people will continue to ask for help, yet wont provide any details whatsoever of what they want or what they have done.

    what are the stains?
where on the rim are the stains?
what is "the stuff" you used to clean them?
where is a picture of the stains so everyone know what your talking about?
why isnt this info already provided in the first place?

I'd say its brake fluid that has seeped out, or just general road grime.

how "wet" are the rims when you "wipe" them, I sometimes have this same problem, and end up using a virtually dry cloth to wipe them, then wash them...or even a "non scratching" 3M scourer of some sort...

Are They chrome or polished Alloy? I have seen stains on chrome that are not stains but where they have been polished through to the brass or zinc coat depending how they were dipped

If their polished or nickel chrome coated its quite possible that its behind the clear coat itself.
Theres not much you can do besides sand and re-polish if so.

But if they are chrome plated like you say then you can use fine 0 grade steel wool on them.
And no... fine steel wool will not scratch chrome.. Its what truckies use on their stacks when preparing for shows ect...
