Exclamation is my coil pack stuffed????

i have a s1 vt acclaim and it has started missing and backfiring, when i looked at the car started at night time there was sparks coming out of the leads where it's not meant to. so i go and get new plugs and leads thinking the old leads were stuffed but its still happening so i'm thinking maybe the coil pack it only happens when i accelerate quickly or out on the highway with cruise on it happens and i just blip the throttle and its right and when it happens around town i just back off the throttle a bit. it's like it's missing until the spark gets to the right place, any help, ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated

Ok fellas, to test your coil packs,
With the engine off, take the first 2 leads of the first coil pack and then start the engine, now have a look @ the metal tips on the coil pack, the spark should be jumping from tip to tip, if the spark jumps anywhere else then the coil is stuff/on its way out! If the coil is ok then turn engine off, replace leads and move onto coil pack num2 and so forth on number 3!

was your car doing anything else? were the abs and trac lights ever on or did your t/c ever turn its self off? i hope i don't get this on mine because if i pay out that sort of cash and it doesn't work i'll crack up big time

i'd still say you have a dud coil. keep driving it and see if it comes back. I had a dud coil and those symptoms came and went a few times. when i put a new coil on it fixed straight away ... $52 from Repco. but go to autobahn and get a MSD coil, or a supercharged coil from holden / wrecker for a better one.

I changed my coil packs on the week end and it is running better. When i plant my foot more then half way it still jerks but only a little bit. it was better then when i put my foot for like 1/5 of the way and it was jerking. so i guess my coil packs are fine then. I have just changed the sparks and leads about 5 months ago. so would that be a fault in my engine now???

Yeah i would probably suggest that it's your injectors, given your plugs leads and coil packs is ok, a blocked injector will cause your engine to feel like it's missing a beat somewhere, light acceleration can make it worse!, run your fuel tank empty then fill up with about $20 of premium, pour a bottle of injector cleaner into your tank, and then rev your car for about 10-15 mins, if this dosn't clear it, replace injectors that are stuffed!

yes sweet i have not put the injector cleaner in for a while... it could well be that....
now would it be okay to get a full tank of optimax petrol in the tank and then back to normal fuel the next time?
Can you also have optimax + injector cleaner in the same tank of petrol??

yeah, course you can. Its also possible your fuel filter is getting blocked up and needs replacing. Cheap place to start if it hasn't been done in a while.?

I was told by a mechanic that faulty leads can damage coils aswell, so its good to keep your leads/plugs in reasonable condition to avoid other problems!

So have half a tank of normal fuel at the moment.... would it be alright to fill it up with optimax petrol from now?

Also check in plug that connects to Coil Pack is it clean and not corroded

The small connectors can corrode and cause poor connection

This can sometimes cause this issue

Use some WD40 to dissolve any corrosion

I was advised this by a good auto electrician who didnt want to rip me off just to fix something that wasnt broken
