    Default VX Roof Racks...

    Hey guys

I'm thinking about getting roof racks for my VX Acclaim... (ghey, I know)

But i hate the ones that have the flap thing on the end and sorta hook over the door jam.

Is there a way to fit racks to the roof channels on a VX? or do i have to have the shit lookin ones? The channels have the black rubber strip in them and so don't look like they have mounting points.

I think you can fit them to the channels but it might be just the wagons I'm thinking of. Either genuine or aftermarket, like Rola.
Here's an example but I just noticed that they don't go in the channels so I'm probably wrong.COMMODORE ROOF RACKS VT, VX, VY, VZ - GENUINE HOLDEN - eBay Roof Racks, Exterior, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 22-Feb-09 19:48:15 AEDST)

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.

I used to work at roof racks galore back in the day, and yep, unfortunately the only options you've got on a Commodore sedan is the style with the flap into the door. Unless you want to pop rivet some mounting pads onto the roof itself.

Those tracks aren't useable at all, unless you've got a wagon.

If you go to holden or supercheap etc you can get roof racks that will fit into the channels unfortunately they're a bit expensive..

garywg, are you sure? gslrallysport seems to be the SME here and claims otherwise. Or do they come with a mounting kit that rivots on like he mentioned?

    thanks guys

The ones for sedan in any of the brands you'd consider (Rhino, Rola, Thule, ProRack) didn't use the turret join covers (what you guys are calling tracks).

The ONLY ones that ever used the track area were the ones for the crewman by Rhino, as the roof line is different, and actually taken from the Statesman. You could *possibly* use the crewman kit, but yes you'll have pop rivet the mounting pads permanently, which in my opinion, when not being used to carry stuff, looks worse than the straps ones.

Or, the crewman kit may not fit at all, and you'll be left with holes in your roof. The only other one that used those tracks were for the 3rd bar (far front one) on a wagon, when you had a two bar setup on the tracks, and needing more carrying capacity. Which is fine for the front pad, but still leaves you with no options on the rear bar.

The strap ones are actually fairly strong. I'd personally go with Rhino over Rola for strength and quality, or if you don't mind the look, the Thule ones will be the strongest. At least with the straps they're easy to pull on and off and you haven't DECREASED the resale value when you come to sell it. Roof racks are a practicality thing, they're not a fashion accessory!

For a mix or looks and load carrying these are the ones I'd go:
    Rhino Rack - Roof Racks for HOLDEN Commodore 4dr Sedan VT/VX/VY/VZ 09/97 - 07/06
or for a more sporty one:
    Rhino Rack - Roof Racks for HOLDEN Commodore 4dr Sedan VT/VX/VY/VZ 09/97 - 07/06

or the crewman kit looks like this:
    http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_..._484_3772.aspx
^ See the pad at the bottom that gets pop riveted in. That's molded to suit the roofline of the crewman, which I can promise you is actually very different to that of the sedan. So you'll end up with pads with gaps that don't fit, and/or bar lengths that don't work also.

If you're looking around, and think you've seen something before, the genuine Holden roof racks for the VT-VZ are Rola brand...

Any other q's just let me know.

    Cheers,
    Greg

I was wanting exactly the same thing for my VY Berlina so I enquired at Auto Extra today in perth and they quoted me $309 and they told me it has to have the metal straps. I rang Holden and they are getting a pair in and quoted me $275 so I will be interested to see what make they are and how they mount. I might go and check out the ones from Super Cheap the guy above mentioned that fits in the channels.

Genuine Holden Racks on the VT-VZ were Rola. The VE Sedan were Hubco (Pro Rack), but the wagon contract was taken away from them, and I'm pretty sure it went to Rhino. I left the roof rack industry just as the wagon ones were being developed.

But you will not get roof racks to suit a VT-VZ sedan that will fit in those turret join covers, there's nothing underneath them except for spot welding. You could get a Wagon or Crewman front bar, but there's nothing available for the back...
