Hey,
I am looking at making my lights turn on and off with the ignition. This is so I don't have to turn them off and I prefer to drive during the day with them on, so I don't want to earn a flat battery from leaving them on. I have a 1999 VT Acclaim. Has anyone got this done? Does anyone know how to do it?
Thanks
Im guessing that there is one live wire that goes to the light switch, you could switch this with a relay connected to the ignition/accessories.
My vx has the headlights off feature as soon as a door is opened with the ignition off, did that option come on some of the more upmarket vt?, perhaps better looking into that, or actually getting the vx one.
It could be quite problematical just doing the "simple" ignition controlled relay thing as I have described, possibly not within the regs either.
Do you want the parkers to switch off with the ignition too? hence disabling their ability to be used as parkers.
It may well be a reg that the headlights also need to be able to be switched on without the ignition for emergencies etc.
Perhaps if the vt or vx upgrade proves too hard, you can always get one of those aftermarket headlight warning things, I think they are just designed to buzz when the ign is off and the headlights are on. Possibly would have easy instructions on how to fit them.
i had a car which had this feature fitted. it was an ex telstra car, not sure how it was done tho.
But if ur not gona turn your car off and sit in it for ages your headlights will turn them self off when u open your door anyway?
and i just read commsirac's reply. im 99% sure all vt's headlights will be auto off with the door opening as the VR execs even had this feature.

I own a 98 Acclaim and it turns the lights off with ignition off & opening the drivers door. Lights turn back on when I start the car again.
So you could just leave the lights on all the time just like you want to, your car already does this!
If you want them to turn off with the ignition then I saw a little auto headlight kit at supercheap, wouldn't have been more than $30 that turns the lights off when you turn off the ignition, and turns them on in low light.
Yea i was to believe all commodores from VN onwards turned the head lights when you switch off the key and open the door?
Nope Base model VN and VP commodores wont do it for you, they have a little warning light on the dash only, which is very useless might i add.

Thanks for the help guys. I just found that mine do turn themsleves off. I thought they didn't because I found that my car had a flat battery the day after I got it but it might have also been because my glovebox is broken and it light would stay on.
