G'day all,
I just got the quote from a local franchise of a well known [bulldust] suspension outlet.
First a little background.
We bought the car in Melbourne a bit over a week ago, & were driving it back when we hit a pothole about 500k's from home. It hit hard on the p/s front wheel. Alignment is still very good, no shake or shudder throught the steering wheel, tracks true.
The p/s front wheel is leaning in at the top [camber], & the steering makes a loud knock knock knock when turned left from centre.
The suspension is relatively new. It is all 'name brand' from the same franchise.
I took the car in for a check today, & i recieved this quote:
Description: 5851 VR on bearing plate Qty:2 Price:44.00 ................... Value:88.00
5030 commodore strut brg 2 35.00 .................... 70.00
5409 H/D comm radius rod 2 68.00 ................... 136.00
Urethane alignment bush 1 238.00 ................ 238.00
5843 [bulldust] rubber bush 2 23.00 .................. 46.00
5823 [bulldust] rubber bush 2 33.00 .................... 66.00
pwr steer rack & pinion 1 440.00 ................. 440.00
pwr steer flush kit 1 70.00 ................... 70.00
wheel alignment 4 wheels 1 110.00 ................ 110.00
fitting 1 595.00 ................. 595.00
freight 1 40.00 ................. 40.00
GSR sealed strut 2 508.00..........................
Total: $2407.00
I think these guys are having a lend of me!
Why would the d/s strut, Z-bar, bushes, bearing cap & plate need replacing if the existing suspension is new?
Why would a pwr steering flush kit be required if a new rack is being fitted?
I look forward to your views.
Cheers, Col.

Pedders up to their usual tricks... if it's got dust on it, it needs replacing
Looks like a rort to me, power steering rack should be about half that for a start, can't comment on what bushes would be needed without seeing the damage.
Could be something as simple as a split bush on the swaybar linkGet some 2nd opinions I'd say.

Always In Construction Mode!!!!!![]()
Mate she sounds like a right off with that quote..Shop around
Just got the second opinion from a local shop.
Parts needed: Strut, top bearing & bush, knuckle?, leaking rack, * he also pointed out the engine mount which is just starting to tear & a dented rim.
Strangely, the Zbars & bushes look good.
Unfortunately i will have to go back to 'bulldust' & buy some parts.
Cheers, Col.
A new rack maybe, but reco is 200-250 and work just as good.
Pedders are excellent for their parts, just don't let them work on your car!

Well the only way this rubber should be inspected is after the rear suspension mount is removed as levering them down tears the rubber damper. so they actualy go ahead and inspect your car and while they are doing so they ar eactualy destroying your rubbers. about the only real inspection of broken rubbers that can be done on a vt commodores suspension damper/ rubber components is the front what used to be called torsion bar rubbers and while i was their the little idiot started poking them witha screw driver until i said you idiot they are filled with gel that once punctured are useless. and as for your power stearing if you are losing less than 200ml of ps oil a year that is pretty normal for a car over 160.000km.
also nolathane is a great way of destroying any comfort your car still has so stay away from it. its cheap to buy lasts a little longer but not to the point of the vehicle having another full life. (its just BIg Red Cheap Hype)
I am looking for a Supercharger For A VT V6.![]()
Update:
Bought bearing plate, bearing, strut from bulldust. [ i didn't think we could name them?]
Bought knuckle from Holden $140?
Bought reco steering rack $361 exch. [PIA to fit]
Fitted all parts today. Wheel sits nice now. I will take it in for a wheel alignment tomorrow, then a roadworthy.
We need 2 V- series calais rims. 18". Anyone?
Cheers, Col.
Edit: The Zbars look fine, so do the rubbers. The old strut was bent, & the top bearing had collapsed.

Update:
I had the wheel alignment done this morning. Looks like 2 rims are bent.
The car was also passed for roadworthy, with no faults.
Happy days! Time to change the rego.
Cheers, Col.
Glad it worked out a bit cheaper than $2,400![]()
