Has anyone replaced their own rear wheel bearings? I have a wheel bearing noise, quite loud, especially noticeable on smooth roads at most speeds. I replaced the fromt hubs, but noise still there. I have listened with a stethoscope and diff bearings seem ok. I have replaced plenty of rear bearings on the older model holdens, but have been told that a press is required to remove and replace the rear bearings on the VT. My car has done 240 000 km, limited towing (trailer only) The centre tailshaft bearing sounds ok. Any ideas?
would also like to know :P
Always In Construction Mode!!!!!![]()
The rear wheel bearing on a vt commodore needs to be pressed out and (a new one) pressed in. This means that you have to remove the rear lower control arm. While you are at it, you might want to replace the rear control arm bushes with some nolathane ones.
I am actually just about to replace my front hub. that needs to be replaced as a whole unit, which is how i did my rear one (got one from the wreckers). The rear is a lot harder to do as holden didn't design the rear suspension to fit 100% well into the body - it is difficult to remove and re-fit it.
Thanks Jarryd, did you get a whole shaft from the wreckers, were your bearings noisy or was the shaft damaged? I'm thinking I might buy the bearings and take the shafts and bearings to a machine shop ang get them to replace them, might save me a few $$. Thanks for the tips.
Cheers
Frank
well it depends on how much the shop will do it for. I don't know what you are on about the (drive?) shaft.
A rear wheel hub bearing will set you back about $80
