I just got the steering rack replaced in my VX Calais the other day and I don't know if it is me but something isn't quite right with it now.
I am out for a drive and I will go to turn the wheel and the steering feels okay, nice and light how it felt before the old rack went wrong, but then i turn the wheel couple of corners up the road and the wheel feels harder to turn. I will nd it is pretty much like these the whole time i go for a drive, light steering, harder steering, light steering, hard steering....etc etc,
What could cause this?
i'd say your getting a air lock in the system. try this....
have car parke din netural/park (whichever it is) pop the bonnet start engine pull the cap off the resivior for P/S and run it lock to lock
should bleed any air in the system (get a mate to watch if the level drops) while you do lock to lock

i just changed mine ,and you have to jack up the car, then turn the whell about 30 -50 times this gets rid of eny air in the system lock to lock makes it easy jacked up and dont stuff your tyers
Took the car back to the mechanic who changes the rack, as I can't jack the up and I don't want to mess my tires up dry steering. He said it could be the Variable-rate steering sensor......or the power steering pump,
i checked the manual {max ellerys} could find nothing about"variable rate sterring sensor" eny body know???
Solenoid, rather than sensor? I am pretty sure that the variable rate steering operates open loop, using road speed as the input.
Think I got it mixed up, basically, he said it was what controls the how hard or light the steering is, he described it as a valve.......if its not that part he is going to see the power steering pump itself.
My first thought was a sticky pressure relief valve.
But your speed sensor solenoid could cause the same thing.
I know I don't have it on VT series 1. Not that it matters now that it's manualised![]()
