Default VT SS V8 "Tappety"

Howdy All,

Just a quick question. My VT 5.0L has a bit of a tappety kind of noise when held at around the 2.5K mark for a few seconds.

Now, I would assume they use hydraulic lifters, which would alleviate alot of the tappet kind of noise?.

Speaking to a few people who seem to say that the HSV 195 motors were always "noisy" like that. Im not sold on it though.

Thoughts from people?

Dave

Holdens have had hydraulic lifters since the 60s. Lifter noise quickly became an accepted part of life if you owned a Holden red motor.

Your HSV V8 probably has a lumpier cam than the stockies, which would probably make them louder still.

You can make the problem go away, but it'll cost ya. Valve train mods always seem to have a flow-on effect.

When you say "make the problem go away" what exactly do you mean by that?.

What mods would you see making it go away?

How deep are your pockets?

I guess the first step would be to determine exactly where the noise is coming from, and take it from there. If it is indeed your lifters, then there are dozens of types of lifters available for Holden engines.

Vt ss have roller camshafts and the lifters will be quiet expensive to replace. As far as i know the 195kw hsv only had computer exhaust and intake changes but not camshaft. Sure you havnt got a broken rocker, the lifters are usally trouble free.

If it is lifter noise, the first mod I would be trying
is a bottle of Nulon lifter free. I put a bottle in
our little Kia yesterday and it's previously noisy
on cold start lifters are now whisper quiet. Not
sure if it will last, but for $10 a bottle worth a
try imo.
