im thinking about getting a shift kit for my v6 exec auto but dont know where to start. what exactly am i looking for? how much will a decent kit set me back? is it even worth gettin one?
shift kits are great fun, i won't deny it. definately worth getting, though i'd only recommend stage 2 which can be picked up for around $200-$300, depending on where you go. anything more, and you can probably introduce your car to mr lamp post coz they kick out savagely at stage 3.
$300 for a stage 2, must be basic ? I had my gearbox done about 2 years ago and it was near $700. There are a lot of different components that can be installed, all depends on how hard you intend to drive the car. I did find the hard shift of the stage 2 a bit annoying after a few months ( even though it was great at 1st). The snap into 2nd can be reduced be backing off the accelerator just before the gear change, but everyone has their own driving style.
This stage thing is abit of bs IMO. You can get 2 kits with exactly the same parts and set them up differently. i.e. different stages of shift firmness and apply speed.
For $700 that should include removing the trans and fitting the 3rd apply mods inside the box. Most guys just fit the shift kit by dropping the pan and fitting an upgrade 2nd apply servo.
Transgo HD2-C is good if you are going for a DIY. It is very complex but if you can grasp the instructions it can be done.
Most shops make their own kits up using various components and cost about $400 installed or $600 for a full manual set up. Full manual is only really for a built box though.
