Hey guys n girls
my car has been doing this for a while, but when travelling at a slow speed (<15kph, reversing out of my driveway, driving through a car park), there is a squealing noise coming from my front, kinda embarrassing/annoying and i want it gone.. another thing is that it only happens after the car has been driven around for about 10-15 minutes.. pretty much once the car has warmed up..
anyone got ideas on what it is the problem?
cheers
it could be warped front discs, you feel any shake on the steering wheel when braking from around 80km/h? quite common on vt/vx
nope.. braking is pretty smooth.. only feel a shudder in the brake pedal under heavyish braking when i hit a inconsistent bit of road (pothole etc.)
How long has it been since you've inspected and changed the fan belt? Some people have suggested the soap trick might help you to diagnose if its your fan belt that needs to be changed.![]()
its nothing to do with the engine, i can put the car in neutral with no keys in the ignition and let it roll down a slight slope and it will still make the noise.. so yeh i'm baffled lol.. :S
i haven't changed the fan belt on the car, because i've only had it for 8,000km's, and its got 145,000 on the clock.. but i wouldn't mind doing the soap trick, how do you do that?
Wheel bearings...now to find which one![]()
the noise seems to be coming from the front right.. how much will it cost to get the wheel bearings changed? or can i do it myself?
its not a universal in the driveshaft they squeek in reverse especially
has anyone had this issue? cause it has in the last couple of days gotten worse..
Take it to the mechanic and have them take a look at your wheel bearing. Its likely nobody has looked at yours or even check if theres enough bearing grease for some time. If it is the wheel bearing, the noise will get worse ie. louder eventually a failure occurs...in which case God hopes you're not on the road when it does fail.
You could do it yourself and there are help forums here as well as manuals that show you how...or be easier and give a mechanic a day to fix it for you.
i've taken it to 2 different mechanics (1 being my warranty mechanic, they seem to be deaf and blind when they get no money, understandable though lol) but yeh i think i'm gonna have to take it in again if it might cause a crash..
"It really depends on how bad the bearing is, it can range from barely noticeable to totally seized.
At the barely noticeable end of the scale there maybe a slight noise when steering while the wheel is turning, or while accelerating. (scrubbing sound).
As the problem becomes more pronounced you will notice that the scrubbing sound will get more pronounced, becoming a metal on metal sound. It is possible for the sound to lessen but not likely." - What happens if you need a wheel bearing? Can you still drive? and what is the cost? - Yahoo! Answers
this is exactly what i'm experiencing.. so there goes some more mulah.. thanks for your help guys..
.. ACEMonkey cheers for letting me know what the issue was
..
Thought I'd just throw this in...
Some brake pads have 'squealers' attached, they aren't normally on Commodores but the idea is if your pads get low the 'squealer' metal touches the edge of the disc and squeals.
So maybe check that out before shelling out for bearings.
I've found they show up especially when reversing.
yeh ppl have mentioned that aswell, but yeh cheers.. waiting till the wkd is over then its straight to profix lol..
