Hi I am in the middle of selling my car without a RWC, this is the 1st time im about to sell a car. What do I need to do to sell my car without RWC. They want to get the RWC themselves do i do the transfer papers etc now? do they keep the plates on the car or do i have to take them off? I stil have reg left on the car and im about to pay another 6 months reg for them as it was part of the deal.
I would suggest, getting them to take it through for the RWC prior to sale as it will make it easier on you, technically by law you need to provide one when selling the car or hand the plates back in then it probably has to go over the pits to get reregistered, it sounds a bit of a strange request, theres definate advantage that the previous owner provides rwc, as them doing it could end up with a list of repairs to do that werent expected just to get that RWC
Take the plates off the car and hand them in to the rego branch so you can get some of your money back. Dont let them drive away with the plates on or then again they might want to get it home first and then take them off, When you fill out the transfer paper state supplied without a roadworthy, the rest leave to them. The rego branch will mail you out a cheque
Perhaps read: Buying and Selling : VicRoads
that spells it all out.
No, dont let them drive the vehicle home with the plates on, you can offer to do that for them if you like. Taking the plates off doesnt actually remove you from the responsibility if the vehicle is involved in an incident etc. The registration has to be effectively cancelled by notifying vicroads.
There are definite advantages to buying a car with a rwc, but to a seller it can be troublesome. The person doing the rwc has to err on the side of sometimes being too fussy picky, because the buyer of the vehicle may get an opinion that says a particular part shouldnt have been passed and take the matter to vicroads etc.
If the rwc is obtained by the new owner of the car, repairer will know the new owner is not going to complain that they didnt find enough wrong with it! Sure the vehicle has to then go over the pits at vicroads, but as I understand it the inspection is only checking the basics(for vin, engine numbers etc) and while it checks most of the underbody not a full inspection of all the items that is expected of a rwc tester.
what pits at Vicroads are you talking about?
they dont do any check on the car to make sure its safe, they only check the ID to make sure the car is what your claiming it to be - VIN/Chassis numbers and thats it.
The roadworthy tester does all of the other inspections and if satisfactory, provides a RWC - this has nothing to do with Vicroads themselves.
as for selling, like Comm said, when it comes to a RWC, the tester will go over the car even more if he knows you are selling it - to cover his own arse more than anything.
if you buy a car without a RWC, you will find in most cases the RWC tester will be more lenient with his findings.
Okay, I was told that they do quickly check the car from underneath, I dont know for sure as I havent gone through the process, but believe they can also be a little more scrupulous on checking that emission controls and indeed the right motor for the year of car etc is installed.
having gone through the process in last 4 weeks (and many, many times before), they dont anything of the sort.
they check the numbers to make sure its correct and your not trying to rebirth and thats it.
they dont check anything else at all - thats what the RWC testers job is.
and sometimes they just do quick fixes to make it roadworthy. after i got my car i always wondered why the rear brakes were smelling. the guy i bought it off got the rear brakes changed as part of the RWC. Now i don't know if the guy i bought it off was pulling a dodgy, or the guy doing the RWC (the guy i bought it off seemed like a really nice bloke so im thinking the guy who did the RWC), but those rear brake pads were bald by the time it came to the next service, about 8000ks later. I don't brake hard or anything, (unless of course i have to, but I'm not one of those drivers that waits til the last second and slams on the brakes) so they were either not changed, or maybe from the smells, they were just not bedded in properly?
But my new pads are lasting a lot longer than those did so there was definitely something dodgy about that RWC.
