VT gearbox problems
hey guys,
I recently bought a manual VT (V6) and I have having a few problems putting the car into gear
When the car is in nuetral, hot or cold, i cannot put the car into any gear, no matter how hard i push or which gear I select! I can be seriously sitting at a set of lights for a minute or so trying to put the f****r in gear!
When I finally get moving, there is a clunk to pretty much every gear change! Does anyone have an explanation or maybe any idea what is causing the problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers
Adam

Well, i own a VT V6 manual too, but i dont have that problem (yet!) it sounds to me like the synchros might be shot in your gearbox...have you drained the oil out and changed that? check the old oil for metal fragments and stuff...let me know how you go

I had a think about it last night and i thought that it could be a problem with the clutch...what's the chances of ALL the syncros going?! after all that, it could be a selector fork problem, maybe even some needle bearing gone on your shafts....surely i nailed it with ONE of those...

Did you bleed the slave cylinder underneath the tranny? I just replaced my clutch and when I tried to put it in gear I couldn't. I then bled the clutch and all was sweet.

im guessing that the clutch is out of adjustment, probably not completly dissengaging, or one of those things ecotechmaniac suggested

I think it sounds like an adjustment problem or leak.
If the system is hydraulic" look under the car for leaks around the slave cylinder, or for a leaking master cylinder, check for leaking fluid on the outside/inside of the firewall, feel the carpet etc. If the previous owner ran it out of fluid, then topped it up without bleeding, it may have air in the system and will do what you describe. Solution fix leak, and bleed the system.
If it is a mechanical or cable operated clutch, look for worn joints/cable ends that are about to break, or bent levers/forks inside the bellhousing (a common problem in older holdens, not sure about VN-VT though.
At one stage or another I have had all of the above problems. Damn holdens! :-)

Forgot to mention:
When you can't get into gear at the lights, turn the motor off, select the gear, restart motor then drive off. It will make it easier to drive until you get it fixed.
Be careful, as I had a slow leaking slave cylinder once (I used to top the fluid up once a week), that over night changed to a fast leaking one, and while I was waiting at an intersection the damn thing leaked the fluid out, and the car started to move into the intersection while I had my clutch pedal still held firmly to the floor. Luckily I was quick enough to turn the motor off.
I fix hydraulic leaks immediately now!!
