Hey guys was talking to guy and he said its good once a month or so to just bounce it off the limiter once to get rid of all the crap built up. Just questioning whether i would have to take it all the way up there and im sure it wont hurt doing it but just wanna make sure. And just would like to get conformation of this..
Thanks
its extreamly bad to just bounce it off the rev limiter while there is no load on the engine (free reving it) the rev limiter is there for a reason and i dont think there is anyone here that has not hit it by mistake while driving but i would never do it while its sitting still and not in gear
would be done while driving... forgot to mention
What crap built up???? The only crap I can see is that advice. What possible good would bouncing it off the rev limiter have, shouldn't be any crap in a properly maintained engine, and bouncing off the rev limiter in a badly maintained engine is a quick way of killing it.
If your worried about build-up of stuff in the engine, use premium unleaded and some oil or fuel additives like injector cleaner or that stuff you use before doing an oil change, the stuff they dissolves bad oil so it drains out properly. A throttle body and intake plenum clean every so often won't hurt either. Also make sure you change the fuel filter regularly.

I fried my old ecotec(crankshaft bearing bang!) by hitting the limiter twice.
maybe try hitting speed limiter too i hear that cleans out ya car also
personally i wouldn't be hitting rev limiter at all
i have a couple times while racing (track :P ) and it sounds horrid
keep it off the limiter
unless your car is a rotary and gets rebuilt every year bouncing the rev limiter is not what the engine was designed for, all comes down to how it has been treated but it WASNT BUILT FOR BOUNCING, so dont go "clearing shit in your engine" by doing it. I dont know what its supposed to be clearing out, but if you wanted to fully clean your engine try using proper fuel eg. premium, regularly replace oils, keep filters clean, and if it really came down to it, strip it apart and acid clean the block if you want to rebuild. thats it.

THe only thing is cleans out is your pocket and engine internals as has happened to the previous who mentioned it........ then at the same time, out of curiosity doesnt the limiter protect it from over revving so it shouldnt be doing damage but preventing it ??? Yet it seems to things like valve bounce etc which i believe i have done before...
i rev mine to 6500rpm+ every now and then. doesnt seem to hurt it too much.
I won't even rev my Blender to 6500RPM!!!
i hit the limiter about once every couple months from holding 2nd right out..
just as it pops click 3rd..
hasnt hurt it so far.. its there for a reason.. if it couldnt handle revving that high it would be set lower!
Correct me if I am wrong.. Because of the electronic's in the VT Automatic's it's basically impossible to redline the gearbox?
I know my VN used to always hit the limiter manual shifting the auto box...
Just my 2cents...
Best things to clear out crap build up...
1. Premium fuel
2. Carby cleaner...
3. Pump a litre of meth into your petrol tank every now and again..

Its also good to hit a brick wall once a month too. It gets rid of the build up of mud and road grim from under your front end lol

lol i tried to redline my old na 3ltr vl back in the day just held 1st and florred it... got to 7200rpm and just sorta stopped, then when i backed off it started again... almost like the engine shut off... would never try it in my caprice though![]()
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
why would my tuner set the rev limiter so high if the car wasnt ment to go that far? if it was unsafe im sure he would have set it lower. It only revs that far in power mode anyways, so it doesnt happen all the time. Guys that race there cars with some regularity do hundreds of passes and they rev there engines that hard everytime. there engines seem to be fine.
