    Default Globes - cheaper alternative?

I had to buy some replacement globes for my Vx the other day, so I went down to Holden spare parts, and this is how much it cost:

    Climate control, about $8.50 each

    Middle trip computer screen, $15

The two from the climate control were normal globes, and I think the trip computer screen may have been an LED, is it possible to just buy the globes and replace them in the holder? There is no way i'm paying that much again.

yes u can go down 2 ur dick smith or jaycar (more so) and buy some bezels that will wire into the globe holders. Then slip on the green covers

The better alternative again is the LED conversion.

On a practical note, how often do you need to change them? $8.50 every 10 years ain't that bad in the scheme of things...

It's probably bit above your level of comprehension to realise you could simply buy some cheaper replacement globes in the same time it would take you to go down to holden spare parts. I've had the car for just over a year, and 4 globes have gone out.

Haha just saw your selling a vt for 9 grand.. no wonder you don't mind paying through the roof.

actually yes they r they dont have the tolerance 2 bumps n knocks like LEDs, they blow very easy, ud b very lucky 2 get a globe 2 last 8 years let alone a couple. Also LEDs use less power and generate less heat and more light so y not go LEDs?

The only advantage globes have over LEDs is that they have a better light spread where as LEDs have more of a forward projection so more LEDs r needed 2 get the same result.

If your bulbs are blowing that often it sounds like you have some other problem. They shouldn't be dying that quickly.

Nothing wrong with LEDs if they are done right (directional light and all that) but in my experience instrument bulbs last a bloody long time, so paying bit over knowing they will work and fit without hassles is fine in my book.

Thats the thing most of the time there is no problem Globes simply dont like bumps, vibrations or knocks so they blow very easy.

Also the globe in my power button next to the shifter blew.. holden spare parts guy told me I have to buy a whole new button.. I told him the globe comes out just like the others but he said "No, it may look like that, but it doesn't, you need a whole new button". Of course the globe did come straight out.. just couldn't find another one the same size..

Hes right ina way they only sell them as a whole (switch) same with rear elec window switches but ur right they do come out. The same globe that fits into ur power, hazzard, fog, dome, LPG switches r all the same but u can easily replace them with bezels.

This other 'guy' seems to know all about buying globes cheaper so why has he made a thread about it?

Well that pretty much sums your knowledge right there, why don't you stop posting on something you know nothing about? If you actually read the thread everyone except you has contributed to the discussion. You've already proven you can talk like a bogan with no clue, you don't need to continue.

A VT for $9000 - i should sell my S2 VX SS Manual for $20000 then.

anyway, head down to the wreckers and ask for another cluster.
if you let it be known that you dont want it for the cluster itself and are willing to accept a high Km cluster, you should get it even cheaper.
even if this costs you $30 for the cluster, youve now got a good 10 or so globes to get you through the years.
i did this and then put the globeless cluster on Ebay and at the end of the day it only cost me $5 for all the globes i needed and plenty of left overs.

u could do that and isnt a bad idea but u dont know if the globes r blown or ok or not till its tested but chances r u'll have enough if its the cluster or either A/C units but if its a single switch its a hit n miss.

Edit: cluster globes r exchangable they r the T5 wedge type that u can get 4 like a buck new at repco or the likes.

So i pull my dash apart, pull out this globe for behind the trip area in a VT with single panel cluster, who do i take it to for a replacement? Holden, who will be expensive, or? What options are there for a straight swap?
