Yes you can play burnt CD's in a stock VY commodore, however you will have to convert the whole disc to a normal audio CD (80 minute limit). Unfortunatly the stock head untis didn't come with any codecs like MP3 or what not to play files directly from teh CD.
what format do they have to be to be playable ?
anything particular

As alien said, make sure you burn the compilation as a normal Audio CD (80min, approx 15-20 songs depending on song lengths), I dont think it really matters what the source file format is, (preferably .mp3) as they are converted to a standardised format in the burning process.
Power is measured in DECIBEL
lol, i remember when i was a kid and tried to put mp3 into normal cd players. annoyed the hell out of me when it wouldnt work and i didnt know why
Hit the star under this post if it was any help to you =D
Use Nero, open it up and copy you MP3's to it, then create CD and "burn to disc" button, and it does it for you.
Not very hard at all.

early vy's couldnt play burnt cd's, if they were too thick.
the later once could.
my vy had the cd player replaced with a vz one and it is fine
does it play mp3s if so id probably better off just changing it over?

No stock Commodore CD player was capable of playing MP3s until the VE came out...if you want to listen to MP3s in your car, you'll either need to use an iPod or install a 3rd party headunit.
