Issues with VY'S

Was thinking abotu starting a thread the Mods could make sticky about issues we have found with the VY'S that could affect everyones car and keep a record of the issue and fix.. this of course would be unoffical and not backed by holden or JC... Thoughts?

To kick it off these are the issues I have found and have been fixed...

Ones I have been told effect the range...

Front ASH Tray hinges need a mod

Power Steering rack requires a modification on most VY'S to stop SHUDDER at low speed full lock turning

Door actuators on most VY'S prevent unlocking of the doors esp in cold wet weather...

Door seal's can leak on some VY'S

My VYss suffers the ashtray problem and thats it everything else you mentioned has not been an issue .My major issue is waiting for my rebuilt gem engine cause mines got the death knock.

thanks - central locks on my VY11 SS occassionally gets "jammed" using keyless entry. Locks only come half way up and need several goes to unlock or have to use key in the doors - and yeah, mainly in cold or wet weather. have been meaning to mention to dealer and will now next service.

Another mod for the list - had an issue with "brake disk scuff" - if I drove at lower speeds with window down could hear a constant "scuffing" noise from all wheels. quite loud and annoying. turned out to be sticky hand brake shoes (or something like that) and Dealer fitted a mod kit for it and all good now.

thanks for the update ratty,just purchased a vy v6 about 3 weeks ago and the only problem i've found so far has been heavy steering, especially at high speed. my previous ride was a vr and the steering was a lot lighter.

My old man bought a VY auto a few weeks ago, and the only problem he has is the shudder in the steering. Any ideas on what it is exactly and how to fix it ourselves?? Thanx!

Yeah I am told its a kit from Holden... basicly longer hoses and slightly larger... gives the oil more room to move... not sure how that exactly fixe's the issue tho... Holden did mine under wrty... known fault.

Hi guys,
since picking up my vy S2 S in july 2004, brand spanking from the factory, (had factory sunroof and lsd ordered and also cosmo paint, which dealer had no floor stock) i've only had a problem with the front passenger actuator and now a squeaking when engine is cold. i've been told though that the squeaking is most likely due to the cold weather. i think it could be that, or maybe the idller pulley. is anyone else having the same problem?

Funny you should say about the squeaking, I started mine up this morning and noticed a squeaking sound, once the engine is warm it appears to disappear.

I haven't investigated this one yet but my immediate thought was the serpentine belt.

When the air conditioning is turned on there is a strong 'musty'smell. Its only when the air conditioning is switched on and is evident when on fresh or recirculated. Smell is not there when air is off. Smell does seem to lessen after a period, or you just get used to it, not sure which.

Cannot seem to locate the source or why it is just air conditioning related.

Any suggestions?

yeah ensure that its draining correctly... there might be trapped water inside getting musty...

There's always a good puddle under the car after the systems been used and the rubber gromet doesn't appear to be bloked either. There's no unusual fogging of the windscreen when you turn the heater on either. I've had a VR that didn't drain because of a bloked gromet but it never smelt, just overflowed into the cabin and fogged the windscreen.

Is there a filter of some sought that may be causing the problem and if so, where?

Great idea having this..should have one for all the models, I read this with interest this thread will have a bearing on my decision to get a VYII Berlina or a VZI Exec. By the time it comes to buy I will know more than the dealer about just every issue that has affected the VY's/VZ's. Thanks guys

just an update on this post, i had the car taken back to holden today and they re-aligned the pulleys. i'lll let you guys know if there's still the noise on the next cold start.

Yeah my fathers VY Does the same thing... found out the waterpump pully was rubbing on the belt (second time we have had an issue with belt rub on is VY) they replaced the pully and belt... all seems to be good atm... they did it on Thursday last week... No issue as yet

ummm, ok...wen i start the engine in passengers side i hear this shuddering noise . In service they told me its from Airconditioning pipe to the passenger side.the fixed it but its bakagain so i have to take the car in again.
Just put the car in drive mode and youll hear this shaking nose from under neath the air bag...its irretating

Got the same shudder in my VY Berlina, I was told it was the ABS doing a self-check. What did they tell you was causing the shudder? Do they really know :b:

Hi all.........When l start my 2003 vy v6 up the engine occassionally idles rough as though it is running on 5 cylinders and only when cold.Does anyone have the same problem or know what the cause is. Its been back to Holden but they cant find anything wrong with it. HELP!!!

i had that happen only once, they replaced the spark plugs and said it should be it. Has not happened again and it didnt register a fault with the computer, so i hope that was it

I'm getting the steering problem with mine. Is this actually something that should be fixed under warranty? As mine is a late 02, I might have to get it back to the dealer rather quickly...

Cheers Mate. I have just bought a VY Wagon, after heavy rain the rear passenger carpets are wet (suspect door seals?). The steering also vibrates at slow turn!!!
That's two out of four!!!!!

I have a lot of road noise coming through...

Don't know whether it is from the 18 inch wheels, whether they are rubbing, if it is the brakes, just general road noise or what....

Also seems to have the same problem with the gearbox that my VR had - when going up and/or and cresting hills at about 70-85kph, can't seem to decide between 3rd and 4th gears, and sort of feels like it is dropping in and out of both...

Anyone else have these issues?

(I have another issue with birds crapping on my car, but not really the cars fault though!)

VY II V6 ACCLAIM....
shudder from power steering at low speed, seems all have that...
interior fan seems very noisy (at centre vents) at speed 2 and upwards....
auto trans has slight whine when in first gear and taking off slowly...
otherwise just really enjoy driving it !!
