Does anyone know if in HSV's the power steering pump is the same as standard VY power steering pump?
Found where my whine was coming from, so new pump is needed.
Any help appreciated, cheers

easiest way is to ring and get the part number... compare them both.
Odd that a PS pump would go in a car so young... weird.
aZk.

Ok, turns out both pumps are exactly the same!

Mine was whining, but we just tightened the hoses to sort.
How would tightening the house stop it from whining exactly?

The power steering on V8 LS commodores has always been a problem when you start using the steering quite vigorously.
There have been reports of the plastic reserviors actually melting from the heat generated.
If your doesn't have a power steer cooler I suggest you fit one and if it does then you better fit a bigger one, maybe one of the tube and fin style like this one on eBay, also think SC did an article on them.

Hey Minux
You would have the speed sensitive one wouldn't you, should be around $350 to 400 (thats how much it is for a VT anyways)

Nah, no VY has a speed sensitive one on the LS1 engines, all berlina, SS, calais, HSV have the same pump as confirmed by Holden.

not sure if its the same thing but when i put in my new radiator i had to manipulate the power steering fluid reservoir, accidently loosening the outlet hose, letting air in (bubbles in the reservoir) tightend the hose up and all was fine.
Any change in pressure can cause 'whine' that includes loose hoses. Fixed mine up by having a complete flush with new fluid and noise went away straight away. New liquid looked like crystal water compared to the soup as it was before, hard to 'see' unless you have new and old fluids together at the same time. Its recomended that most fluids like brake/clutch/steering be replaced every 18-24months, so even new cars under warranty have them changed. A single track day can be equivilant to months of driving on public roads, so changing fluids more often is understandable.
Hey minux, you still going to do track days in the subbie?
Ouch how many mm movement we talking about? more than a couple and should start geting worried.
A lot of auto parts stores do change over power steering pumps, drop the rooted one off and pickup a reconditioned one. Prices would differ all over but theres even ebay for those that trust that way.
