i anve been shopping around for a 2002 Statesman and two that I am interested in have the same problem. There is a small compatment on the lower dash infront of the auto stick shift. For some reason the compartment door does not close. Is this a common fault for this model and can it be fixed?
Yep, pretty common fault. Holden sell replacement catches to repair the problem, not sure of the price but it's under $20 I think.
Thanks for the quick response Calaber
Just to help others replacing this part. The Holden part number is 92103515. Phone around since different dealers have different prices. I bought one at Suttons East Sydney for 22.77 including tax.

clearly demonstrates how to replace the unit. Note on the Statesman (not sure about other Holdens), there are two storage units. One on the front dash and the second on the centre consol facing the rear seats. Following the instructions from the post, the rear storage unit was easy to remove by applying pressure to the inside right hand side of the storage compartment . But the front dash has this faux wood trim which restricts the ability to apply the appropriate leverage. Inside the unit on the right hand side is a slot. This slot is actually the “tongue” which locks the unit in place. If you use a flat edge screw driver and apply pressure with you left hand while pulling the compartment unit with your right, the storage compartment will slided out.
If you are having problems with the front storage compartment, pull out the rear one to see how it all fits together. Hope this helps.
Another little latch stopped working again! Rather than spend another $20 at Holden I searched Ebay using the part number 92103515 and found them for sale for around $1.50 each. I splurged and bought two!
