    Default auto trans issues

i remember reading somewhere on here about diagnosing trans problems but i cant find it. lately my auto in the ss has been slipping between 1st and 2nd when i was givin it some stick. now today under normal driving the box has decided to shit itself. it goes from 1st to 2nd, then as soon as it hits 40km/h its revs out like as if its in nuetral. (slipping) so i cant go any faster. as it wont go past 2nd. anyone know of possible problems. i cant really afford a rebuild. GRRRRR

    cheers,

you need to adjust the bands and flush the fluid and change the filter

this will fix it but if it comes back soon then you may need a new box

I was told the bands were self adjusting on VY's
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'

the vs, vt, vx and vy box - 4l60e is not adjustable

    the bands are self adjusting

pull the dipstick out and smell the oil.. if its got a bad burnt smell etc the box is most likely shagged

You can pick up 2nd hand boxes for a couple hundred

And the vp runs a 4l60... the mechanical controlled version of the 4l60e in the newer models..

i advise to look for second options.. i picked up one with under 100thousand ks for 150 bucks

4L60 is a common box. Also known at the Turbo 700. Cheaper to rebuild then a 4L60E (having had multiply rebuild of both boxes before discovering the Turbo 400 which is virtually indestructable)

But going by your problem, something is wrong in the 3/4 drum. Either clutches are gone or the clip has come out the front (I managed to blow one of these drums up). If you get a rebuild, recommend going a beast reaction shell in it's replacement.

    4l60e Problems and Solutions
    6. No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive
(in 2) until you can get it fixed.
