hi guys
today i was driving up a ramp in a carpark, and surely enough, the battery died just at the tip of the top. so i had to get out, push my car to the farthest edge i could to let people drive ! imagine if it cut off half way up the ramp! damn! i couldn't start the car or do anything! only parts of the dash lights were on, and the battery red symbol was solid red.
it restarted in about 10 mins ,but i sweated more in those 10 mins than any other time in my life!
the nice fellows at NRMA came over, and the guy gave it the all clear. he tested what he did, and could not figure out what happened, told me he had never seen this before.
wonder what it could be?
social - i have no idea how to check all that, but the NRMA dude played around with the battery and looked around, and said it was all good
cheb - my girlfriend said it could be the alternator too. yes she knows more about cars than i do
itd possibly be the alternator.. wouldnt the car still be able to idle without battery, well i woulda thort the ecu etc could run off the alternator.
check the charge rate of alternator
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car
Alright ill check that out.
Do i need specific tools to do so?
Check your battery with a hydrometer , you could have a dead cell. Happened to my old ford once .Was driving at night and the lights got dimmer and dimmer and the car just stopped . got a mate to tow me home and the next day the car started then it happened again . Checked the water in the battery and in one of the cells the water was black .
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
+1 on alternator. Car shouldn't stop running if the alternator is working even if the battery is flat... Thus why you can roll start a car with a flat battery.
Are the bettery terminals corroded of have that white powery crap on them?
Has it happened again since?
Yep i'd be checking the connections around the alternator and battery. Also get a multimeter and check the voltage across the battery while the car is running. It should be ~13.8 - 14.4v. If it's lower or higher then there is a problem with the alternator or wiring.
Well the NRMA mechanic checked the battery, and found no issues with it.
Where is the alternator located in a VY ?
It did not happen again, i had about a 6KM journey back home, and everything was fine. And theres no white powdery stuff or corrosion around the battery cords to my recollection
How much fuel was in the tank???? Was your low fuel light on?? sounds more like fuel starvation to me.... up a steep ramp , low fuel , fuel pump pumps air . .. presto , engine dies... etc etc. when you get on the flat ground all comes good....?????
well i had about 50% fuel
yeah when i get back home next week ill take it to my local mechanic and see what the result is.
thanks for the help fellas.
