    Default Handbrake not holding

g'day guys, my handbrake is not holding. there is tension when you apply it but the ratchet / clicking sound is not there and consequently won't hold. Anyone know how to fix it ?

Sounds like the spring that holds the ratchet in place has either broken or dropped out. You will need to pull the console apart to get to it.

you're kidding !! is that a difficult job ? can't i get to the handbrake off without doing that ? i can see a couple of nuts to undo after i've taken the boot cover off. looks awkward but i reckon i could reach them without taking the consol apart.

If you think you can get to it, give it a go. The console isn't that difficult to remove though. Do a search, I'm pretty sure it has been covered.

How to: Remove Dash and Center Console VY-VZ

I had to do this to my SV6 to adjust it. When u adjust the nuts on inside of the wheel you'll have to do the same inside the car, hence y u have to remove the centre console.

I had the exact same problem about a month ago and made the exact same thread lol.

Just replace your hand break leaver, not to expensive.

Listen to Daniel555, he knows what hes talking about.

yeah i think i'll do that. didn't get time this weekend anyway. how did you go about getting it off ? remove the consol or the two bolts on the handbrake ?

    Default vy handbrake removal

what a load of crap about taking the consol out !!
slide the seat back, lift the handbrake boot up and undo the two 15mm nuts. then with a long nose pliers take the electrical clip off the sensor and then undo the cable nut with a 10mm rachet spanner. off comes the handbrake !
now i need to take off the boot cover. i can see the arm that holds the yellow lever is loose so i reckon the spring is broken or come off. i'd like to take a closer look to see if it can be fixed or buy a new one.
anyone know how to take the cover boot off without wrecking it ?

Default vy handbrake fixed - no cost !

got the boot off by searching other threads. by getting a small screwdriver i flipped the back of the plastic handle up and it just flipped off. sliding the boot cover off i noticed the metal part that attaches to the long yellow plastic bit that the thumb button on the handle operates had broken. rather than buy a new handbrake i explored ways to fix it. i came up with drilling a small hole in the plastic lug and wiring it to the metal arm. bingo ! works a treat. putting it all back was a bit fiddley but handbrake is now working fine. i'll post a couple of pics. later so you can see what i mean.
