    Default Clicking noise from engine

    Hey all,

just wondering has anyone had a problem with their engine "ticking"???

It is only small noise at idle but when the car is running in higher revs the sounds is louder and is constant with engine revs..

we have been told it sounds like the lifters so have replaced a full set of 12.

However the noise is still there.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Have heard maybe it could be a problem with the cam bearings not feeding enough oil to the lifters and has been a recall by holden regarding this???

When did you first notice it?

My SV6 makes a slight ticking noise but only on short trips i.e less than 30km.

I was advised by my mechanic that services our company cars to get some Nulon Eng flush leave it in for a few weeks change oil & filter, fill up & put in some Nulon Lifter free & tune up.

    Then see how u go.

Tried the lifter free bottle, still ticking,

this lasts until you turn the engine off, changed oils, still there...

Nah theres no exhaust blackness around any manifold. the cars only done 70,000ks.

replaced 3 lifters last night as holden are dead set on "its definately your lifters"..... Bullsh*t.

Cars still ticking away... Maybe a bent valve or worn valve guide??

I had the same problem, I got it hoisted up and had a look undrneath and it ended up being a loose sparkplug. Tightened it up and the noise stopped.

    OK people,

guess what, holden have diagnosed the problem.....

Only after they put in 12 NEW lifters again, started it up and found that it was still ticking.... hmmm could have told them that...

When they first had a look at the car the put compressed air into the cylinders and removed the valve springs to check for a broken spring...

    All ok..

told us to put more lifters in, to which we put 3 more... after we initially put in 12...

We carried out a compression test at home and found no. 2 cylinder to be low, but a squirt of oil fixed that.

We then looked at valve movement and found no. 2 inlet to be a bit sloppy but coudnt do much as holden had already okayed the valves etc.

Once they put 12 new lifters in, and the problem didnt go away, they removed the valves springs again and found no. 2 inlet valve guide to be flogged out...

So theres the problem..... flogged out valve guide

so now holden are saying its gonna cost US $3,500 just to fix the ticking....

I can get a recon engine for $2,500....

So much for a buy a local car and support the industry.....

No support from them and a rip off if you ask me....

    Give me a FORD instead!

Sorry to hear that you're upset with the price to repair your engine. You should try having 'broken/sick body' repairs by Medical Profession. Boy is that ever expensive. Bowsel Cancer removal, in excess of $15,000 Total hip or knee replacement $8,000 - $12,000 and so on.
