I've had a look through the search and come up with nothing of value on this topic, all sorts of conflicting claims on the cause of the VY steering shudder - some say pump, some say high pressure line, some say the power steering rack itself. I'm a little confused, because I'm trying to work out how to fix the problem in my parents' VY Tonner and can't seem to find a definitive solution. I don't want to go replacing the pump and rack if it's just caused by a poorly designed high pressure line, which I was always under the impression that it was.
Any info appreciated
cheers

Mate it's apparently just a matter of getting larger power steering hoses installed. Mine still does this as I havn't bothered getting it done, but it doesn't bother me.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
That's what I've heard also, just looking for confirmation and part numbers if anyone's got them handy.

The fix is to replace the hose. It was/is a common problem with them.
There was a recall on the powers steering hoses a few years ago don,t if it is still valid or not maybe check with holden
High Pressure Power Steering Hose - Holden Part number 92174786
StormVY - thanks. I'll ring Holden tomorrow.

I don't think the recall is still valid, my series 1 had it done, but when I phoned Holden about it when I got my s2 they said "no recalls" ????
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I meant call them and order the part![]()

Im looking to get this shudder fixed also.. How much would a mechanic charge to replace this? It seems simple enough, but I can just imagine trying it myself and getting fluid everywhere.
Cheers
Just found out that the power steering hose that was quoted is $220.40 from Holden. F*k that is expensive!
My VY did this while parking, it's only at low speed. I flushed the system and added new Dexron 3 fluid with some Nulon conditioner, it fixed the problem for about 12 months/ 10,000km and it is just coming back but not as bad. The fluid I replaced was a dark colour. So if I was you I would try replacing the fluid and adding nulon. My next try will be to use the actual Nulon power steering fluid and see how that goes. Dexron 3 is not too expensive so the alternative is to just replace that on a regular basis. Those pipes mentioned came out as a revision in 2004 and a friend who has one has no shuddering problems at all. Are they a simple bolt on replacement or do you need to drill the square bar they attach to?
i rang my dealer today and they quoted me $181 for the part. im also wondering how much it would cost to get a mechanic to install it. i got my car serviced yesterday and they found that my power steering rack is leaking and needs to be fully replaced, so im wondering if the power steering hose is tied into this somehow and will get replaced along with the rack? if this is the case i don't want to have to buy it just to have it be replaced again.
My Series 2 Berlina has that bloody shudder and I reckon it's getting worse but I'm stuffed if it's bad enough to spend nearly $200 to fix. Typical Holden attitude though - the part was obviously faulty in its design, so they issue a recall. Some dumb shits (including the original owner of my car, obviously) were too bloody lazy to get it fixed so they let it go, and now the recall is out of date. I didn't realise it had been subject to a recall so I haven't sought a warranty job on it - just put up with it and had thought about replacing it myself, but that price puts me off.
If it has been recognised as a defective design from new, it should be replaced even after five years. My car has only done 85k so it hasn't done an enormous amount of work compared to the average VY.
Have you tried flushing out the system and using a good quality power steering fluid like Nulon for example? I think you can take off the return hose and shove it in a bottle and top up the resevoir while someone turns the steering wheel with the motor running. Do it until clean fluid comes out. You may have to block off the return barb on the resevoir. It's much cheaper to replace the fluid say once every 10,000km and it will probably make it last longer in the long run. VY stering racks shouldn't leak as much as the Vt to VX types.
