    Default vy berlina v8 power?

    Hey guyz

Just saw that berlina v8 had 225kw and 460nm torque as apposed to vyII which got 235 kw and 465 nm torque. I assume thats very little difference you can barely tell...

Just wondering what makes the extra power in the vyII and in the SS and SV8 models? is it the exhaust?

Was also wondering what best place around Sydney to buy/upgrade aftermarket parts installed and/or a good mechanic and modding place in Sydney around Ryde area?

Sorry for noobie question but I been searching everywhere but can't find answers. THanks!

I can't be sure but I think it was the exhaust that added the 10kw to the SS.

I remember a road test of a VY V8 Berlina and the tester called it a sleeper with the standard Berlina appearance and the almost SS performance. (until he hit corners - then things changed a bit)

    Until getting aroudn the corners?
Doesn't SS and berlina V8 have same suspension and chassis and everything? wouldn't handling be the same? Or do SS have extra mods to aid in handling?

Nup. Berlina had standard suspension, not FE2. The springs would have been stiffer than the V6 models but were still oriented towards comfort, not handling.

My understanding is that there are two different exhaust systems for the VY models. All models were 235kW standard, except for SS and SV8 which came with what Holden call a "sports exhaust" which netted 245kW.

I have not heard of a 225kW VY though... I thought the VX was 225kW and the basic VYs were 235, with the SS and SV8 being 245kW with the "special" exhaust.

I am by no means an authority on the subject however...

Just got myself a v8 vy berlina. has FE2 suspension too, got it checked out. Got some other HBD options which is cool.

where is a reliable place i can go in Sydney to get mods and advice? I'm probably just going to get a cat back and do something with the air intake but not much~~

I've been searching the web for freaking weeks and I can't for the life of me find out where to go get exhaust mods and stuff done~~ anyone help?
    Thanks!

Where should you go for advice?

    HERE!

Spend some time going through the forums and as long as you look properly, you'll find all the information you could ever want.

Regarding exhaust, I have no hesitation recommending Sureflo Exhaust at Ingleburn. See thread I posted here for the work they did for me:

Drives real nice and its awesome to have instant power compared to my old turbo car hahaha~~ I think the people that complain that these v8's have 'lag' never driven a turbo before?! hahaha

Anyway thanks for your help and I definitely do a thorough search for a few days before posting on here as not to waste peoples time so apologies in advanced if asking repeated questions, I use the search in here and google to find things first before asking.

They do seem a bit 'laggier' due to the Auto ratio's in them... They were designed more for a cruiser than a sports sedan like the ss's...

not sure if this makes a difference but I've got a 'power' button on my transmission. When I press it says on my dash 'power' and has little cog wheels as an anmation and then when I press it again it says 'normal' and same animation... Would this be what your talkingabout with the 'sportier' SS setup?

Either way they are tiny little things that make difference and I am not racing my car so it doesn't bother me~~ the only thing that bothers me is how quiet the car is! I think I Would like SOME V8 beefy sound! Nothing too loud though~~ hahaha I will think about getting an exhaust soon! =)

Pushing that just makes it hold gear for longer.

The 'power' button on the transmission is present in all commodores and has been since the introdcution of the electronically controlled 4L60E 4 speed automatic gearbox in the VR Commodore. In models fitted with an electronic gearbox (all autos these days) the powertrain control module (the computer) controls shifting between gears. By default, the shift points are calibrated to keep the engine operating at the highest thermal efficiency, which is good for fuel economy and reduced emissions. When the power button is pressed, the PCM switches to a revised mapping for shift points, which makes the car stay in the lower gear for longer before upshifting, so that torque is readily available when you want it without having to wait for the car to downshift. This mode also downshifts to a lower gear more readily when the throttle is opened, rather than waiting to see if you REALLY want to go faster and push the throttle harder.

On VYs, while the shift point mapping is slightly better in 'power', both modes are still fairly retarded, and one of the first things a tuner will do is modify these points to something more sensible that makes the car respond much more readily.

I agree completely. Changing between the two modes in my Berlina makes almost no difference in downshifting. It seems to need a bootful in either mode to get out of fourth. It's annoying because the car seems to want to lug in top when a drop to third is so obviously needed.

I'd love to consign the four speed to the dustbin and fit the new six speed auto in its place.
