Gday all,
Just driving around today around on the freeway, ect and i thought i'd put the boot in at a set of lights, only to hear this unearthly rattle/vibration coming from the mid/mid right section under the hood. Since then i have noticed the sound whenever the car pulls past about 3000rpm. Never heard this sound, and i can assure you its not the first time i've givin it stick at a set of lights.
Help would be appreciated, got a cruise down to Mandurah for Australia Day, and would hate for my engine to fall out lol.
Thanks in Advance
Cam
P.S Could it be my cats have finally died (they do rattle a bit on idle), and i probably should replace them![]()
I have the same problem - i pulled off my exhaust and the cat is a performance straight through design, the whole guts of it have come loose and are slowly rattling out! . Does it creak and rattle at just under idle revs?
Yeah they do, although its intermittent at times, Since series 2 VY's are dual cats though ill have to replace both, mite get outside in a bit and belt them with a mallet, see if it changes the vibration at all
just unbolt your exhaust and poke the honeycomb bit with a screw driver. Mine is loose - i can push it around.
Lucky i planned to go twin hi flow cat next month really...
Yeah will unbolt it first thing in the mornin *cough* going to gut them *cough* lol, should do for a temporary fix until i get around to buying some next week. Thanks for your help mate.![]()
No worries. Let us know if it stops the rattle.
I know first hand how annoying it is, but he is right. It is a backwards move and he'll be underneath the car again shortly after he's gutted them..
-Nick.
If you think the rattle is annoying, wait till you get the fine for gutting the cats. Fines worth more than your whole car is.

It clearly states that he's buying new cats next week. SHEEEEEESH!
Having them gutted for 1 day can land you a massive fine. Would it really be worth the risk? GEEEEEZ

Probably not. GOSHHHHHH
Is it worth the risk? Massive fine versus a few more days with a rattle. SIIIIIIIGH

Dunno if mine is the same as op's, but I have a rattle in my VY2 S coming from the exhaust area (haven't noticed any rattles coming from under the hood, though) particularly at around about idle revs. It sounds a little bit like a loose screw.
Assuming it is the same rattle, approximately how much would I be looking at spending to have it fixed? I had a similar rattle in my old car - which turned out to be a cracked manifold - and had to fork out $200-300 to fix it. I would probably be thinking about replacing/upgrading the muffler/exhaust (if that is the problem) if that isn't too much more expensive. If so, any tips? I wouldn't want it sounding like a 180 with chromes, just a bit louder.
PS, despite studying mechanical engineering, I still only have a reasonably basic understanding of cars (mechanically speaking), so bear with me.
I had a mid front rattle, sounded like the exhast, turned out that one of the small heat shields had busted screws and would rattle at idle/low revs and woud dissapear at higher revs. A pair of tin snips soon fixed that!
for a while when i planted my foot i had a rattle that was driving me insane...
had a play around under the hood one day and noticed that my engine cover had only 3 rubber grommets in it.. went to holden, got a free one and problem solved... im not sure if this is whats happening with you but it worked for me. its easy enough to pull your cover off and have a look.
