Ok, so I've been told, or read, that to jump start a newer commodore, which I guess would be maybe VS through to VZ, let's say so for argument's sake anyway. That we need to attach the red lead to pos on the battery and neg, or black lead to a "metal part of the engine." Is this so, and is it the same if I was using the commodore to start another vehicle? Would the other vehicle have the leads just attached to the battery as normal like in the old days or would the leads be attached to the "flat" vehicle the same way as to the Commodore? At work I have seen a VY or VZ jump start another vehicle with both jumper leads just on the battery of both cars and no problems resulted from this.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Its just the recommended way of doing it, supposedly you can hurt the electronic computers in them much easier attaching the earth straight to the battery (I dont see how) although attaching the neg jumper lead direct the engine provides a much better earth for the starter motor. But i have always just hooked the leads straight to the battery terminals on both cars for many years no problems.
Power is measured in DECIBEL
I've jumpstarted my ute countless times and used mine to jumpstart an old VS almost as many. No problems here.
You can only damage your alternator as its pumping out about 100 amps plus to charge the dead battery and when the 2nd car starts its alternator kicks in as well. Thats when you can get a spike if your unlucky but you dont hear to much about it only years ago.
you can also turn your headlights on when jump starting which is supposed to help absorb voltage spikes when disconnecting the leads
i doubt your alternator is going to put out 100amps to try to recharge your battery
