just a quick question, sorry if it sounds stupid but i was just wondering if anyone had a picture of a vy s pack (stock ride height FE2) with 18's on. I was thinking of putting some on my car but im a bit sceptical about lowering it..Will putting 18's on raise the ride height and will the space between the guard and top of the tyre remain the same?
thanks guys
generally as you go up in wheel diameter , you will go down in tyre profile (wall width) So the nett result is a ride height about the same, so unless you go stupid & put 20" rims on it , you will end up approx the same ride height , between 17's & 18's.
the out side diametre of your trye doesn't change from 15's thru to 20 inch with 30 series tyres so no your ground clearence wonth chage. It's a bullsh*t myth that people spread around however with lower profile tyres it creates the illusion that the gap between the tyre n gaurd is larger then before.
thanks for your help guys...so atm i have 225/50/16 your saying if i decide to get 18's i should get a tyre with the same rolling diameter say like 225/40/18?
235/40/18 is perfect
235/45R18 is a better match.
The VY S Sedans normally came with 17 x 8 inch rims and tyres 235 45 17 with diameter of 645 mm (The Vy S utes usually ran 16 inch rims ex factory).
IF you upgrade to 18 x 8 inch rims you need a tyre with the same diameter and width.
235 40 18 tyre gives you the same diameter at 645 mm (give or take a few mm with different manufacturers or tyre designs).
Guyman says he has 16 inch rims with 225-50-16 and usually these were on 7 inch rims on VY commodores. I assume this must be a ute if it is a VY S pack. These tyres are about 633 mm in diameter.
........................ rim width.......... tyre diameter
225 50 16....... 7 inch rims ....... 633 mm
235 45 17....... 8 inch rims ....... 645 mm .................... standard fitment VY S sedans
235 40 18....... 8 inch rims ....... 645 mm
If Guyman is purchasing 18 x 8 inch rims for his VY S pack he should use the 235 40 18 tyre (as VTpredator indicated above). (235 45 18 is much too big in tyre diameter and is not the correct upgrade for 18 x 8 rims).
thanks again for your help guys and sean880 i dont have a ute VY series 1 S pacs came out with 16" wheels the series 2 had 17's. Anyway now only to decide what wheels to actually get.
Cheers again guys
Don't forget to advise your insurance company when you have fitted the new wheels. This is a vehicle modification and all modifications must be declared to the insurer.
If you fail to advise them of vehicle modifications they do not have to pay out on any claim you make for your car regardless of what it is and there is no come back. You can dig a big financial hole for yourself and potentially ending up paying out for third party property damage as well if that's involved in the claim.
Some guys think it's smart not to declare vehicle mods to their insurers because they are afraid the company will decline to continue the insurance or raise the premiums. Very stupid indeed.
Anyone making changes to their car should have a very close read of their comprehensive insurance policy.
i had a vt with superlows and vyss rims on and whrn i had my car accident they paid out full just didnt insure the rims and stuff but make sure cos all policies are different
if your curious about what the ride height will look like i have a VY-S Pack series one with 18" wheels and standard FE2 suspension as i havent got around to lowering it and am still unsure if i want to

yeah totally agree here i had a mate who fell into this trap he was lucky that his insurance company paid at least half the claim.
Thanks Delish-VY, i think that looks perfect for what i'm after. Nice set of wheels too what are they called? and what size tyres do u have on?
they are osaka machined black phantoms, not 100% sure on the tyre size as my mate works at the place i got them n he sorted it all out for me, but yeah i do like them, you have to be careful with what type of rim you get aswell because some wheels can look smaller than they actually are just because of the design, so have a look around before you buy anything n try n find a pic of a car with the wheels ur gunna get on already n see what you think

you are just making that up i think. i just went from 17/45's to 20/ 35's and gained about 3.8cm. its pretty simple maths to work it out. i went up 3" in rim size (about 7 or 8 cm) lost 10mm tyre height. now to work out how much height i gain i half the rim size difference (because you only gain in height to the centre of the hub), then subtract the 10mm height difference in the tyres from that number. so therefore i was 3.9cm gain (from the rim), minus 10mm (tyre) = 3.8cm ride height gain.
i know for a fact because i just did it on my car today.
i cant understand why people are so certain it makes no difference to ride height......
p.s. i know its a thread dig, but i nearly made choices based on what is written here. so i felt it would be nice to ammend seing as it comes up in searches forever....
ok. i was just assuming that part. what does the 35 and 45 represent?
i just measured my 225/35/20 tyres then mid post. the sidewall of my tyre from the rim to the tread edge is 35mm. obviously the tread adds more millimetres(10?) to the overall, but i wasnt counting that in the first place
It's pretty confusing, but check out this site:

Your sidewall should be 56mm on 225/35 tires.
Profile number is a percentage of width afaik. So 245/35R19 would mean 35% of 245mm = 85mm
That seems a bit high though...
Silver Certified.
im angry at numbers :[
anyway, when i measured my sidewall, i only measured from the edge of the rim to the edge of the tread, which was coincidently 35mm on my tyre. i suppose some tyre is tucked in behind the rim lip and the height of the tread.
i definately gained just over 3.5cm ride height from the 17 inch to 20 inch wheel. i was having a problem with the sideskirt and front bumper being too low. the sideskirt was only 10cm from the ground at its lowest point. now its nearly 14cm.
i can see myself in a tyre shop with a tape measure, notepad + pen sometime this week. haha.

I'm not sure if I did it right though
You'd get the same answer without converting it to inches and then back to millimeters. That's just making more work for yourself and confusing the masses.
