Hi,
Thinking of replacing the O2 sensors on my SS.
Is this a straight forward job - both easy to get at for someone with basic tools? I may have access to a hoist which will make it easier.
Where are they located? Assuming somewhere between the exhaust manifolds and cats?
Thanks
yes easy to do, just need a 22mm spanner, if you can get a socket of someone for oxy sensors makes it easier for loosening, but 22mm spanner does the job just fine.
there roughly around the middle of the car, transmission area, they just unclip at a plug either side of the trans and unscrew them, you can use the factory ones or for half about the cost i got the ngk ones, personal preferance though, the tip is halfe the size, but that's how they are just incase your wondering.
oh yeh if you can't use a hoist just jack the car up and do when cold, will take no time![]()
Cheers mateSeems easy enough.
Did you notice better fuel consumption after changing them?
Interesting about the aftermarket sensors... Looking at using Bosch sensors, there is a guy selling them on ebay for $59 each so thought that was pretty good. The last sensor I replaced was on a Toyota and cost me $300!
Did you try a dealership they may have AC Delco as well as genuine and the AD Delco parts in my experience are usually a bit cheaper than the Holden branded spares and just as good.
When I did my VN I found it came out easier when the exhaust was hot, the instructions did say if it was too hard to get out to heat it a bit. Just need to be careful when you put the new ones in if not using the proper tool not to crack them.
Nah didn't try the dealership, Bosch are a good brand and for the price you probably arent gonna get much cheaper.
Reading around it seems like its best to do them when hot, loosens the thread or something. Cheers I will make sure I'm careful!
Is this one of those parts you should look at doing once every couple of years?
Bosch reckon the 4 wire sensors have a life of around 160,000km, so maybe a bit longer
Their performance deteriorates over time. I think their response time to changing O2 levels increases. I didn't change the one in my VN until I got a code 13 error. Car ran OK even with the intermittent fault light but I changed it quick smart.
I won't bother with the 2 in my VY until it starts chewing fuel as the moment it's good 10.3L/100km around town and 7.5L/100km on a trip and has done 138,000km
They also come with anti sieze paste on the thread and it says don't use any other type unless suitable as it will contaminate the sensor.
