hi guys,
just wondering how big of a job it is to change the pulleys, my vy makes a tinny rattle/squeaking sound on take off and again around 3000rpm. i have replaced the idler pulley because it was farked and i think the sound is now coming from the ac pulley. Whats the easiest way to get around the radiator hoses, i just had a full radiator flush and some kick arse coolant put in so i dont really want to lose any if i can help it.
cheers
Hey Robbo, from what your saying it wouldn't be the pulley it would be the belt, if it was the pulley the sounds would pretty much always be there.
Id say that someone has gotten some of that coolant on the belt, either try giving it a clean or if it is needed replace the belt i find it easier to take the serpentine belt off and remove the idle tensioner pulley and bracket to give you a tiny bit more room its a pretty tight fit the bottom pulley is a tensioner, its clockwise to loosen, from there its pretty straight forward.
If the other ac pulley is gone from memory its a large star pattern key to remove
Hope this helps a little
It's not the exhaust bracket near the transmission is it?
These brackets can crack and make a similar noise to pulley and belt noise.
I have seen many mis-diagnosed cases of this noise, one guy replaced all of the pulleys one at a time and then the belt before he bought it into the shop.
As soon as I heard it I told him it was the exhaust bracket,he nearly cried.
It may not be this, but check it first,it may save you some time and money.
cheers,
whitey: i actually thought initially that it was one of those brackets around the exhaust, will check that out, if i replace the exhaust will those brackets still need to be there?
karni: i just bought a belt so i will try that tonight and see if it helps. will let you know how i go.
Whitey you are a LEGEND!!!
replaced the belt and still had the sound, looked at the exhaust bracket.... completely snapped in half where it mounts to the exaust, actually fell apart when i losened the nut, you would think they would make a decent bracket, imagine if that fell off at 100+kms it could really do some damage. LOL funny thing is now that the sound from thats gone i can hear a pulley bearing the needs to be replaced.
thanks for the help mate, i owe you a beer![]()
