Hey guys,
I am look to but my first car fairly soon and want to spend about 15k.
I always want a VY S pack in manual but i have found it difficult to find one. Now i am think of getting a VZ sv6 which is semi-automatic.
Any thoughts or ideas?
You don't need two threads asking the same question...
Either would be a good car, if you can find a VZ SV6 for $15,000? Not sure how much they're going for.
Its almost imposiible to find a late model commodore, V6, in manual, most of them have been snapped up already. If you do find one, chances are they'd want a fair bit more for them, because they are 'rarer' than the auto. (strange, I know, a few years ago you'd pay more for auto?)
Either way you go, you'll need to factor in insurance, rego, tyres, all running costs, etc. Which can add up quite quickly.
up to you, you would be far better off with a vz sv6 as far as resale and so forth go. nicer looking car aswell..
and being the vz its not ecotec its the alloytec190. personally id go the vz if i could find one priced accordingly but dont spend all 15,000 on one with 200k clicks on it just so you can have the manual... auto's still go alright and you save alot on tyres.
i love the s-pack VY's over the VZ's myself, i also think that VY's are better as they use the ecotech engine, which are easier to get 2nd hand parts for, and since the VZ was the start of the alloytech, im sure theres some bugs with them, where as the VY's were the later ecotech's.. Choice is yours really, but as the others said a manual is kinda hard to find, unless you do some kinda conversion down the line.. so i know that probably didnt really help ya but just something to think about i guess!! :P
I think the VY's have a nicer front than the base model VZ's with the step in them. That said the VZ Berlina cover is nice.
The Ecotech is probably a bit easier to work on and they go forever.
If I was going to get a VZ it would be a Lumina with front similar to a Berlina with driving lights or an SVZ.
thnks for the help, i'll keep an eye out for a nice VY S in manual but i think i'll struggle to find one thats not been trashed.
Would the 190kw sv6 engine run better than the 140-odd kw VY S? engine
personally, i would go the vy over the vz, the vz series is the first to have the alloytec in it, so its a relatively new motor, where as the vy has the last of the ecotec motors which have been running from VS-VY, id go the vy i feel they would have ironed out most of the flaws by their last motor!
1st car get a VN, every young guy I know that got a nice car on there P's either wrecked it by thrashing it or wrote it off.
If thats too bogan for you, you can probably pick up a nice VT for around 3 grand.
I thought the same thing, the ecotec has noticable less power. But after speaking to a few people that owned both a ecotec and an alloytec, they felt the ecotec had more torque and was faster off the line. The alloytec had more top end power.
I'd also like to point out, as your a P plater.. your power restrictions limit you to 200kw.. meaning on the VZ you really have to watch what modifications you do. Exhaust and intake would probably be the only performance upgrades you could do.
Check out my ride!
There was a nice white VY S manual for sale at Car City Minchinbury it may still be there. I think you'll have a bit of trouble finding a manual one. Regarding the engines it depends on how they have been looked after how far the Alloytech has travelled and whether the 140,000km oin the VY was done without thrashing it. At that level of use check things like the alternator, aircon etc as these would generally fail before the engine. Other things would be oil leaks, front suspension rubbers.
My VY has 138,000 on it now and runs really well, idles smoothly and around town I get around 700km out of a tank of fuel.
The VZ's also have an upgraded front suspension, the links for the sway bar are better but there are aftermarket kits for the VY.
Thanks for the help
i'll let you guys know what i end up getting and then i'll probably ask for help on mods
yeah dont go getting a good car for your first one, dont be picky :P
as that guy said get a vn - vt for ur first
bahhhh get a shitty old VY then upgrade to the Ferrari later :P
id wait till your off ya p's and get a vy sv8 or ss
id recomend the vy as they are cheaper, i bought a vy aclaim for $8,500 with 77,000 ks 2004
a vt for 3k would be a piece of crapola lol, and any SV6 for 15k is also gunna be very average, you will have to spend at least 18 to get a decent one and as the other guys said, keep in mind the 1k+ for insurance then if u add rims (which you will lol) theres another 2 to 4k then sound system another 1k-3k ...just dont spend outside ur means as they have said, its only ur first car, i had a 88 corolla as my first car, damn thing was as old as I was! but it went strong for over a year of me ramping speed humps and drifting roundabouts completely throwing out the wheel allignment lol n i spent about 200 bucks on it the entire time i had it, from all of us that have experienced the fun of a first car, believe me...there are stupid things you will want to do in your first car that you won't want to do in a 15k car...if u dont wanna go as old as a VN though u can score a decent VX for about 7-8k and pimp the sh** out of it

yeh thats it .. VX's are just as good as a VY anyways, and most people think they look better than the VY's anyways lol
id go the vy mate cus its cheaper so you can have more cash once ur off ur p's for a v8 or a better car, my first car is my vs ute end of this year im looking at getting a ve ss-v ute, so dont go spending heaps on it mate
Exactly what i thought. I wouldn't reccomend anything too modern though if you wince at the thought of $2400 a year for rego, ctp and comprehensive insurance.
Vy S packs aren't too hard to find in manual - i was looking for an auto when i bought my ute - the one i have now was $2000 cheaper than the auto, had 50,000Km's less, and it's a manual!
buy a magna, then either car will feel like a super car
lol i remember looking at that post thinking the exact same thing but couldnt be assed point it out haha, and yes...changing to a year newer badges?...what a waste of time
