Hi Guys,
im looking at upgrading to a newer car in the next 6 months to replace my daily, id like to get back behind the wheel of a commodore as i think they're better looking than the ford equivilant, i wont really be modifying it because lets face it 1 "fast" car is enough i just want something that i can drive to work and back and enjoy driving, unlike a failwheel drive
looking at 1 of 2 cars, i'm not really biased anymore im looking at the cars for what they are not the badges, so i'd rather not hear about how much better you think one is than the other because of who make it.
Holden Commodore VY-II SS
Ford Falcon BA-XR6T
Both cost the same ammount really, both have good motors, same years/ conditions/k's and about insurance too, im 23 so ill pay a bit on insurance anyway.
Redbook says urban driving (i live in the suburbs so this is the value ill be using),
VY-II SS - 13L/100km - 245kw
BA-XR6T - 12.5L/100km - 240kw
13L/100km is pretty good on a 5.7L v8, is this a imaginay lab result or a actual day to day figure? has anyone had experiance with a xr6t effiency, im not too fussed just trying to weigh up the options.
my old 5ltr loved to suck down juice like it was free.
I'm after anyone that drives on to work and back, not sure if they have a trip computer that displays L/100km, i have a weird condition where my right foot is heavier than my left, i know this can impact on fuel efficiency too.
Well this will be an interesting thread! I'll tell you my experiences from owning a VY SS for the past 3.5 years. I drove mine bog stock for about 12 months before I did any performance modifications to it. In that time I'd say I averaged high 12's to low 13's overall. I've since had a MAFless tune done, full exhaust and OTR.
Some people will claim better fuel economy from a tune but to be completely honest mine hasn't changed. The thing you will notice most going from a 5.0 to an LS1 is the weight, or the lack of it. It doesn't feel like it has a big heavy block over the front axle. As for fuel economy, I think what I'm getting is great!
BTW I'm selling my VY SS if you're interested!![]()
Thanksexactly what i wanted to know, if your selling one in about 3-6 months then i might be intrested
at this point im just doing some research![]()
my verada gets about 12-13L/100km and the motor is 1/2 the size of a ls1, maybe because its pushing a car thats a similar weight and fwd, guess i wanted to make sure the stats weren't just numbers pulled out of a hat. I'd still be intrested to hear about other peoples experiances aswell.
Even stock you"ll get good performance and good economy. I've had my car up for sale since November. It is currently going for $16,000. Not going any lower than that so if it doesn't sell I'll keep it. Won't be replaced with another V8 so I'm in no hurry to get rid of it!![]()
the xr6t and the ss will be about the same in fuel usage.the ls1 is really slow stock so almost guaranteed you will be modding it.i really like the turbo and came very close to selling my ss for one so you cant go wrong with either
this is a thread about fuel consumption, so ill cut right to it.
my ls1 adventra 245kw stock used about 16/100 - with the tune iv got it to about 13/100.
Its no ss, but its the same engine and trans. Just heavier
Theres no way you'd get 13L/100kms around town in an LS1. That figure will be a combined motorway/city driving.
If you do 98% city driving like I do, expect high teens or even 20L if you have a heavy right foot. XR6T wouldnt be much better either.
Personally I'd go for the SS, the Ford transmissions are rubbish from what Ive heard, people have broken them after getting a simple flash tune
I can get close to 10l/100kms on LPG on the highway from melb to brissy, but around SE burbs i could only do a best of 16l/100. This is both before and after a maffless tune, it made SFA difference in economy. Idoubt you'll find much diffrence between the LS1 and the turbo around town, but on the highway the turbo would be that bit more economical.
hey mate.. iv got a manual VY SS and live in St Kilda which is pretty much in the city.. i drive to Port Melbourne every day for work and hardly get my car onto any freeways. My fuel average is sitting between 13.6 to 14.5L /100kms depending on how heavy or light my right foot is.. and all iv done to mine is chucked a set of Pacemaker extractors on.
Not being biased as i am also a fan of some of the fords, i'd personally go for the VY SS. v8 grunt over turbo's anyday for me.. and like another poster has already mentioned, iv also heard about those gearbox problems in the fords!
Anyway it all comes down to what you prefer mate! goodluck!
Cheers
"If you want more inches.. STROKE it.."
"Wait are we still talking about cars!?"
having a cammed manual ls1 i avearge combined 13L/100 after owning a worked manual BA XR6T the clubsport gets better fuel economy and making more power 280rwkw compared to 272rwkw with same dollars spent
DVLHSV Stage 2 is Now in Operation
My VYII Clubsport http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...clubsport.html
Im getting an average of 14.5/100 around town my VY SS.
Personally think the BA Six is a peice of shit. We've had quiet a few come through work (Im a spray painter). They never seem to want to start, they're down right horrid on LPG too, seriously take 15-20 cranks to kick over. They have REALLY bad low end torque, in comparison to a bog stock standard LS1.
I make the judgement based on around 20-30 BA - BF falcons that have come through work, they all seem fairly much of a muchness.
Im not being biased, one way or the other. Plenty of other cars out there i'd take over my VY. They're just my expiriences with them.
Aside from the motors, I find the door ways to be very low, as is the roof line. The front windscreen seems to slope along way back and the sunvisor blocks 90% of my view.
The seats are far worse then my SS seats. The dash layout is pretty good, and if you get the 5speed semi auto, it would be an improvement over the 4spd auto in the VY (IMO).
They are family cars mate. Not sports cars. They just happen to have a V8 in them and a fancy bodykit.
yeah i know but there great cars though ill have mine till it dies
I have a VY V2 monaro with a JHP Maf pipe, pacemakers headers, high flow cats and a 2 1/2" redback cat back system and dream if 13 Lper 100kms. I get more power now but around town I get high teens between 19-20 liters per 100. Hwy is about 15 at best. I might go mafless tune, not sure yet.
You had a super6 last time i spoke to you, been a while!
14 second 1/4mile isnt too bad for a stock car, id like to see a fiesta do that.
most of my driving is @ 100km/h on the eastern freeway (i drive 60km a day usually) maybe spend 15 minutes a day in bumper to bumper traffic, usually have a work car if i need to go on site or get reimbursed a generous ammount for fuel,
13L/100km was urban, combined averaged was 14.3 i think, check redbook, my 5ltr would get about 700-800km a tank freeway driving, barely did 1800rpm to maintain speed.
Id perfer the commodore over the ford anyway, id more than likely be going manual as i perfer driving with a real gearbox.
I average around the 14's for town driving. Down in the mid 8's on a trip in mine.
Mafless tune, otr, exhaust and a manual.
Manual XR6Ts are fantastic on fuel once tuned. I remember watching the readouts on one I was driving for the caryard I used to work at, and cruising at 50, 60, 80, 100kph it was using LESS fuel than my foam tuned VN 6banger auto. (which used bugger all fuel)
Food for thought.
Honestly I'd lean toward the Ford in this case, they are not bad cars! Buy one with country km on it, odds are the turbo is less thrashed out than a low km one
re: MAFless LS1s - don't know why you guys haven't noticed an economy difference, but every MAFless customer I've been in contact with over here has had some significant savings.. can't explain that one
Also, means nothing really but I once managed a 9.8L/100km trip in a totally stock VY SS 6spd on a suburban trip, few red lights etc, top speed 60kph... granny shifting at 1500rpm and only using throttle position 1 or 2.. BARE minimum necessary for accel/movementI was impressed

I don't understand how you get 13L/100 from an LS1, There must be something wrong with my car. I've got a 6 banger (ecotec) and i have to cruise like a grandma if i want to keep it below 15L/100
Check out my ride!
VZ SS manual, bog stock, mix of highway and city (used to be my daily) gave about 16.5L/100. In really bad Sydney traffic I've seen it touch 19-20L/100, if you keep it in flowing traffic without too much stop/start bumper-to-bumper type stuff you can get around 14 with a light foot.
Bottom line is, while its fine to want good economy, you need to realise that when you buy a V8, you're going to use a fair bit of fuel. My suggestion is to assume you're going to use about 18L/100, then when you scrape in under that you'll feel better about it, rather than expect 13 and feel shitty when you pull 15![]()
