Hi guys was just wondering if anyone can help me, i getting a vy v8 soon with tricked up gearbox and was just wondering if its possible to by pass the radiator and just have a stand alone trans cooler. if so what sort would you recommend would it be big enough to do the job or should i just use it in conjunction with the radiator set up? cheers
Nothing wrong with running a stand alone cooler just depends where you are and how much stop / start driving you do. There might be 2 brackets in front of the radiator ready to bolt up a trans cooler otherwise the brackets are about $30 from Holden (simple bolt in job)
Personally I would run an external cooler and have it run back through your radiator.
I used a large TCI brand on my old VX SS and the trans temps were reduced very well.
Ey mate,
I run a separate transmission cooler, bypassing the radiator, has dropped the temps by about 15C. I decided to bypass the radiator just in case it fails and coolant gets into the transmission or vice versa.
FYI my temps before the cooler where: 55C to 60C when cruising and upto 80C when stop starting and driving hard
After the cooler was installed: below 50C (thats as low as my gauge read) cruising and max of 65C when driving hard
Cheers
thanks guys, yeah im more inclined to go bypass the radiator. i know they build radiators better now days but just in case.
