So my bonnet is by far beyond repair.. it literally has more stone chips than paint on it. I've thought about having it resprayed, and from my last post about spraying something i got some positive feedback so i thought i'd ask..
Assuming i removed, sanded back and gave a shop my bonnet, how much would it cost to respray? And is it worth the effort to do my own sanding.. would it take much of the total cost$
My second question is.. why the hell does my bonnet get so many stone chips? It's increasingly gotten worse over time.. it seems every day there's a few more chips. my front bar cops no damage what so ever..check out the photo of my bonnet.

Tim,
Painting will have so many Contributions that will alter your final cost. For example, Prep of the surface, Quality of the paint (Brand) and most importantly Quality of the painter.
Good paints such as House of Kolor or PPG don't come cheap, However you really wouldn't need that for a stock respray. Doing your own prep is a good way to save some money, However make sure you do it to the painters likes - The only tip i can give you here is make sure you use a 800grit MIN for prep.
My only other advise to you is call around, Get the best price. Like i said painting can prices can be very different from one panel shop to another, EG: For a bonnet you would be looking at a $150-$600 price vary no doubt, Even excess of that figure.
I hope that is off some help to you, And Good Luck with the search!
Regards,

Thanks for this info. Well when it comes to calling around, i'm sort of limited.. i only really know of 4 - 5 places close by.. 1 place said he could respray my whole car for $1000. The other said it would cost more than $1000 in materials alone, and yet another place said it wouldn't be under $10,000 for a full respray. So it's hard to know who to trust. For that reason i tend to stick to a local guy who did some work for me recently... who quoted $400 when i briefly spoke with him last..but that's without me doing any prep work. It's good to know that doing the prep work would make a decent effect on the total cost.. i reckon i could go as far as priming it, the rest i'll leave to the pro's...
When it comes to sanding it back, would i need to sand it back to bare metal? I can't imagine doing that with 800Grit, i'd more likely think i'd start with a 200 or so, then move onto a smoother paper. Well anyway thanks for your help so far, and for the info on my black door stripes... and FYI - i ended up painting them on my own with pre-mixed touch up paint in spray cans. It turned out alright, not a paint shop quality result.. but good for a $30 job, and seemless from anywhere past 1m away from the car.

Tim,
Like i said and you have seen for yourself, Price can vary quite a allot - By the quotes you have received for doing the whole car. I would NEVER trust a guy that quotes $1000 to paint my whole car. The paint would be horrible, And he is probably a rushed painter and you will see spray lines through, Blemishes throughout the clear etc
To do a whole car, With change of Color $10,000 sound's about right. If you are changing the color of a car, and doing it properly it is a massive job! It means removing most of your interior, To do inside door jams, Inside doors etc. And removing all the engine and accessories to do under the hood. If you were doing a full respray without color change i would expect $5000+ for something good. So you could see, The painter who quoted $1000 would be a bad job, and chances are you would have areas of the old color such as the engine bay and door jams. And as far as materials go, For PPG i think your looking at $200 a liter, And to do a complete car you need a Min of 6L (For a commodore anyway) so yes you would be looking at $1000min for paint.
As far as prep goes, Allot of people don't bring it back to bare metal. There is no real reason to. So no you wouldn't have to sit there for hours with 800 and get it back to metal. Yes you can start with more abrasive paper, but i wouldn't get to excited. Your best bet would be to get a random orbit sander and just go nuts with 800, Ge it real smooth all over and make sure there is no evidence of chips or the like - Has to be an even surface. Remember, Painting is all about prep work, Especially dark colors.
Cheers.

hi
about 400 sound about right to paint the bonnet with no prep work if you want to do the prep urself just remember you have to get sandpaper etc to do this so $400 is pretty good price
agood painter should be able to do this edge to edge
less tailgating, less stone chips :P. My VY still has factory paint on the bonnet, never had a protector on it and has less then 15 stone chips
I had my bonnet re done not that long ago as i needed 3 dents to be removed thanks to some coons 12 stone chips. It cost me $300 plus a free loan car and turn around was 1 day
I rarely tailgate and quickly back off if i start doing it by accident, and most of the roads i drive on are smooth and new (atleast too and from work). It can't be that causing stone chips.. and wouldn't you think it would hit my front bar atleast once?
Where did you get that done?

Tim,
As mentioned already you should not really go on price but instead quality. You get what you pay for at the end of the day. Guy I work with recently had his WRX bonnet resprayed by a local guy for a couple of hundred bucks. He is not happy with the end result and has been back 3 times for touch ups and still not happy. I told him he should have gone to someone more reputable and paid to have it done properly and professionally.
I am also interested in doing this as I scratched the bonnet the other day and it gives me the shits everytime i get in the car. I also have about 6 stone chips but nothing like that. The overall paint and clear is good on my car, would the colors match? The car is red.
Sorry to hijack but I didn't see the point in another bonnet thread and the info is relevant for you too.
