Hey guys,
have a very annoying intermittent rattle/vibration when in gear and idling (not in neutral or p) and only when standing still, as soon as you accelerate it dissapears, I have considered that it could be the hydraulic lifters/cam followers but I figured that would only be the case if the problem happened on cold starts only...
Its loud enough to hear from inside the cabin but only when there is no other noises, its not very loud but louder than the injectors ticking, and not very sequential, its quite random in terms of frequency.
It does admittedly happen MOSTLY on cold starts, and usually lasts for the first 5 minutes or so, but it does also sometimes happen when warm...
It sounds almost like there is something loose that's causing a vibration but I haven't been able to find anything or narrow the excact location of the sound down (seems to be coming from left of engine) which suggests to me its something internal.
Just some background:
VY commodore Lumina v6
Always fully serviced (in fact I did one a few days ago but didn't get rid of the rattle) and pretty much everything has been done in the last 25,000km including brakes, tranny service, frequent oil change, spark plugs, air filter... Only thing that hasn't had anything done on it is the power steering.
Does not get thrashed (especially driven carefully on cold starts)
160,000km
If it is the hydraulic lifters, I know its a big job to fix, but it doesn't really do any damage (other than annoy me) does it?
Any other ideas to what it could be?
Thanks in advance.
Also, just to add, I have considered it could be the harmonic balancer as well, but its coming from the left back of the engine bay so i doubt it, but whilst I was looking i did notice the harmonic balancer was a bit wobbly... The rubber is still intact etc but its just a little bit wobbly, am I right in thinking this is normal and part of it doing its job or should I get that fixed?
Any ideas?
Edit...whoops....better double check my finger selection before posting!![]()

Not something silly like a clip broken in the engine bay and that rattling, had this in my hilux when i hit a big pothole and snapped a clip off the brakeline (guessing thats what made it brake) and only sometimes rattled
