    Default exec petrol consumption

i know theres a fair few of these threads floating around but i couldnt find it.

im averaging 14.4 ltrs/100km in a stock exec. i pump up my tyres every 2-3 weeks and use shell unleaded. i used to get around 12 to mid 12/100kms.
also this might sound like a stupid question but is there a way to turn the aircon/heating off completely rather than just have the fan on? or is putting the thermostat to the middle the only option?

Engine air filter elements should be changed every year for optimum efficiency and obviously more often if driving in dusty conditions.

The aircon is always completely off until you press the aircon "button" to activate it. So just make sure the button is off. If it is not off the air con will start running every time you turn on the fan.

Heating uses no power because it is produced from hot engine coolant being circulated through the heater core. The coolant flow is turned off when the temperature dial is switched over to the cold setting. You do not have to turn on the electric fan for heat but the heating will not be very effective just relying on flow through air entering the vehicle when you are moving - with the vent system open.

If you are unsure of the operation of the controls on your dash consult your owner's manual.

nah i know how to work it i just thought maybe it was using petrol from having the fan on because heat was coming through, but thanks for clearing that up

well if you think about it, having the fan on would use a tiny bit more petrol, as it needs power to power the fan which comes from the alternator, but stuff all really lol ... i dunno why your engines sucking up so much petrol tho, is the 14.4/100kms on freeway or city driving? ..

mine does about 6.9/100kms on freeway n about 10.8/100kms in the city. and round 8.7/100kms average,

have ya checked ya oxygen sensors?? ive found that to be a pretty bad problem with sucking up heaps of petrol, and what octane petrol do ya use? .. maybe the petrol your using is really crap quality and burning extra quick? .. I use that United petrol and ive found for some reason it works heaps better than mobil or shell petrol?

I do half half driving as well and I average around 8.8 to 9.2 depending week to week.

Also, I keep mine serived every 10k, both oil and filter, and every 30k change air filter.

Just keep in mind though the trip computer display can be out somewhat, as mine sits around the 10.5 to 11.0 mark, but am not using that sort of fuel.

    Economy Calculator

I use the above fuel calculator I saw on the net, easy as to use, and will REALLY work out your consumption.

Hey Mate, i got improved fuel economy from making a second hole mod in my airbox (http://swingtan.customer.netspace.net.au/2hole.html)
And by modifying the stock over the radiator intake pipe [http://autospeed.com/cms/A_109586/article.html]

Unless you have a fault with the engine management system or your vehicle's fuel system has been poorly maintained, then fuel consumption is linked more to how far and hard you press down on the accelerator. If you seeking to improve your fuel economy and of course once your car is running in accordance with manufacturer's specifications, try using the acc. as if you have an egg under it and you don't want to smash the egg by abruptlly pusing the pedal down. Bet you find there is an improvement.

that 2nd hole mod looks like a lot of fiddling around, the intake hole i might give a go since it looks fairly simple.

i filled up on wednesday and with the new filter its dropped down to just under 13, ive only done 70ks though so i'll see how it goes

Yeah I used to get alot better economy to what i get now, i clean my filter once a month when i do a check on everything in the car and clean out the engine bay, lately i've been getting say 400kms to a tank i used to get way more, but i drive alot harder now because i drive less, so i kinda make the most of it

02 sensors are due for replacement after 120,000 k's. Or so I've been told, soon to do mine as I've done that many k's. However, I still get around 8l/p100 on the freeway AND 9-10 around town. Air filter changed every 20,000 and spark plugs, too. Same for fuel filter, seems like very poor fuel economy unless you're flooring it each time you take off!
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'

I've phoned a few auto shops and yeh 70 odd bux each on average here in Bundaberg. Depends on the brand, though, some a bit more/bit less. There are two, so double whatever price you're quoted for each.

Me too, i rarely to get over 12L/100k, usually sits around 11L/100k. Even blasting through the Black Spur at Marysville it returned 11.8 or something like that .

STOP using shell petrol . its crap.......
Try using high octane for awhile to clean the fuel system.

It's worth noting you should go on ebay and get yourself a tune from the user 'nicefrog', our very own greenfoam (who has abandoned ship so don't PM him lol)

Intake, exhaust, tune saw my v6 auto VN sit under 7L/100km on highway trips, and around 11L/100km around town. Pretty fantastic for a 20yo car.

DEFINITELY worth the $50 or whatever he charges for them these days.

Send him a message on ebay even if the tunes he has listed don't match your car, tell him what you want and he will sort you out.

    Sam

EDIT: my bad didn't see this was a VY. = does not apply. VN-VT nicefrog is your man
