Just completed the VY two-hole mod in the airbox of my 03 berlina. Haven't had the chance to take it out yet, but is significantly louder then what it was before. I used the 75mm tubing rather then 90mm. Which was lucky because once i had heated and flanged out the tube for the intake, it only just squeezed in. Was a good 3 hours spent though this afternoon...procrastinating about the uni work i have due...argh.
It cost me about 4 bucks, i just bought the 75mm elbow piece and a half metre piece of 75mm straight. Then used plumbers cement and a bit of spray paint to blend it in, sits nice and snug down the side between the box and the LH-side panel.
Cheers
im considering doing this too, but i would like to know the point of melting the pipe to get that lip flange thing, can u get away without doing that part?
ahk thanks, might give it a go on the weekend
I'm also considering doing this. Any pics of it completed mate?
I have done the mod to my VY S/charged V6 & My CV8Z Monaro, both work extremely well. I just used silastic to attach the pipe to the airbox , & purchased a 15 degree PVC plumbing bend to do the job. Cost about $2.90 all up.....
Ye you can get away without doing that flanged part, it won't make much difference although you can flange it in different directions so that it gathers air from a certain direction etc. I have my pipe atm pointing downwards slightly, under the headlight. It's all very easy to do, i didn't need silastic to attach to my airbox, it went straight in and fits snugly. No huge noise improvement so far, went for a drive last night, just a louder roar between 2.5 and 3k. I used the 75mm piping, whereas i think other people use the 90mm, which would obviously allow more air. If i was going to try and make a big difference i might consider a K & N panel filter for it too. Cheers guys, might post some pics soon if i work out how to do it.
Here is the tutorial i followed. CAI: Alien By Design
Just don't worry about the coke bottle thing, thats ridiculous just use a glass jar or other rounded cylindrical object.
Not sure but why is making the car noisier considered an improvement? Has anyone measured the pressure drop accross the standard intake to see if it's too small for the job hence reducing the amount of air that can be drawn in?
No probs I just can't see how it improves the car, the air going in through the standard intake won't get hot as it passes over the radiator so fast. the heat is put into the intake air in the inlet manifold and if you want to cool it I think you woudl be better off not butchering your air box and buying one of those MACE engineering kits that insulate the plenum from the intake manifold.
Ye i can see where your coming from, it will hardly make any improvement to the car, but i was extremely bored and didn't no what else to do but to butcher my airbox haha. Clearly though i would rather spend $4 on a cheap, very basic mod then go for engineering kits when im obviously not that fussed about performance. If i was fussy about it improving car performance then yes i would spend some money on it. Does anyone have an thoughts on the High Flow K&N panel filters? I can get myself one at trade price....are they any good? Is the real difference only that they are reusable, cleanable etc?
Cheers
buy an OTRACAI, their like 150 for my car.., get airbox from wreckers, a pod filter, butcher airbox out haha, put poddy in it and itl be ALOT louder, more flow, and more responsive, wen you stab it youl hear it go, CHVROOOOOOMmate did it, ill try find some pics, k&n oiled pod
Ye i just put the new filter in today, it's even changed the exhaust note, i don't know if its a good thing or not, but at idle is a bit lumpier and deeper. And ye, a different induction sound to what there was before. Cost me 86$ though trade from repco...ok i guess, supercheap wanted 112 for one, without oil kit or anything. Let me know of any more small mods that are reasonably cheap for a VY. Any point me doing headers, exhaust etc? or not really, planning to sell this one, (got it pretty cheap), and save up for a VY Supercharged Calais. Just want that Leather feel! haha
At about $9 for a genuine air cleaner that lasts for 45,000km under normal conditions you realise that at $86 you have now paid for air cleaners for another 450,000km plus! and you now have to waste your time cleaning it and oiling it. Remember not to over oil it otherwise it will get on the air flow sensor behind it.
It came factory pre oiled from the fantastic people at K & N so i haven't touched it. It's all a bit of fun really, i have more important things to concentrate on then my car atm.
headers wont make a huge difference to your car, both noise and performance wise. Unless you do more than the usual two hole and filter swap, such as cam, rockers etc, you wont notice to much of a difference.
however in saying that, theres a strong chance you might just get that one buyer whos died for aftermarket headers for so long he'll pay that little bit extra for the car. if its just for you, id say change the cat aswell as the catback system for noise and that little bit of mid-range grunt. i deffinatly notice it after 2500
Ye I'll have to see, not that keen on exhaust at the moment just because i dunno if im a fan of auto commodores with big fat droners on them, but something thats not noticeable to you give it to it would be nice. I remember with the old car just ripped the rear resonator off and stuck a hotdog in there, sounded not too bad haha on the "1.6L VW Golf" ....watch out.
a redback system off ebay can be bought with a rear straight through muffler on it. closest thing youd get to a v8 sound but wont be newhere near as loud. Sound range is between 2000 and 3000rpm inside the car, anything below or over that its no noticable, so droning isnt an issue. Sound good outside to but again without headers n cats sometime the engine can be louder than the exhaust
i did mine on my vt a little different to you guys, just thought the factory intake looked so small and restrictive.... basically added two flexible pipes into either side of the airbox and into the hole of the front bumper
heres the pics
surely its got to help somewhat.... on idle i put my hand over the pipes and can feel them sucking, so surely at 100km/hr it must force a bit in there, oh and added k&n panel filter as you can see
Nice, good work, looks like a bit of work there. Did you just leave the original hole from the intake open? Could that not draw hot air from the radiator?
