Default Thinking of buying a VY, advice please?

Wanting to buy a VY SS from a dealer, completely stock, price is $22,000 is that fair or what should I talk it down too? (car is in SA, s1, manual, black) comes with 3 year warranty. (gonna ask 19k cash)

When I go to inspect the car is there anything important I should check for, fault wise?

What kind of mods can I do? I'd like to put in climate control and the Calais cluster, possible?

Would also like to change the front end to either VZ or VZ Monaro can I do this?

    Cheers guys.

    1. Someone asks the same question every week so you should search the threads. However here are a couple of references in relation to buying VYs that you may find useful.

What do i look for in a VY SS when buying one
things to watch for when buying.

    2. If you want a car with a VZ front end then buy a VZ SS not a VY. If you want a car with all the Calais frills then buy a Calais V8. In the long run it's much cheaper than buying the wrong car and modifying it in a substantial way. You will not get a cent back on what you spend on such mods in any event when you sell.

    3. Price depends on many factors. The obvious ones are age, mileage, overall condition of the vehicle and buyer demand for that particular model. Go to Carsales.com and look up the car valuations section in the research area and you will get an idea of wholesale and retail values for the model and transmission option you are looking at. You can also see what the asking prices are in your State for similar vehicles, with similar mileages, in the for sale section.

    things to look at:

brake disks, they seam to wear down alot on the front.
power steering box for any leaks.
check all the fluids are freah and not black...

ask them if they can take the car to a RACQ shop where they can do there full car inspection. i was very happy with my report i got before i bought my ute.

Would also like to change the front end to either VZ or VZ Monaro can I do this?

you will be able to do this very easyly yourself in the back yard. can buy all the stuff you need on ebay.

also is it a 6speed gearbox? if so check the clutch slipping as the clutches in the VY arent the best.

also 22K is good, but how many kms are on the clock?
want to see more then a typical commodore fitted with an exhuast, then check my thread out... link broken cuase i dont own a tuff car, i just made it up...

It's a hell of a lot of work. It would be way easier and probably also way cheaper to just buy a car that already has it.

Buy an LS1 VY or Z Calais they have all the gear your after and are really under rated on the market and thus are cheaper in a way.

Some had factory climate control - it was a package deal with leather seats. Well worth looking for it. No major inherent faults in them and as with any used car, the most important thing is to find one that has been well looked after.

I agree decide what options you want and then get a good example that has had the bulk factory fitted. If I was buying an SS I would tend to leave it original so it reatains it's value you know rather like original examples of GTR Torana's etc most of which were heavily modified in their day.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'd really like an SS, just a huge fan of that badge. And as I said climate control are just little extras that I wouldn't mind but are nothing that would tempt me to buy a different car.

I looked around for a VY Calais with V8 and Manual but there were none, probably none were made :P So I'll just stick with the SS! Cheers!

Try to get one towards the end of the VY production or at least a series 2. There were a few things changed over time to fix some problems.
