Hey everyone i got my VY sedan a few weeks ago and ive got some money together any tips on some things i could do to get some more power out of my car ? exhaust seems a good place to start but i was looking for some more ideas short of a turbo. Prices and or places in perth i should inquire about would be great information as well.
I am capable of diy mods but in an effort to reduce police or worse parental attention id prefer to leave it to the experts but am always interested : D
Bolt on supercharger was my friends best bet but im sure people that actually have cars would be more helpthanks.
p.s if it helps its a stock V6 3.8 vy commodore series 2 executive.
roller rockers, intake, exhaust, machined throttle body, cam if funds allow, high stall, shift kit,
go the supercharger the above mods will give you 20-30kw and leave you wanting more after you spend a fair few grand
judging by ur name your on ur p's in which case you can only do the small things that tentvy said however if you get high ratio rockers im pretty sure u cant get a cam
I think crow cams do a cam designed especially for cars with high ratio roller rockers. correct me if im wrong.
The cheapest way to make it go faster is to replace the airfilter, fuel filter, reset the ECU, change the diff to a 3.73 or 4.11, put some good quality petrol in it and push the accelerator pedal harder. Oh and remove weight from the car, that helps.
Seriously don't even bother with modifying a V6 on P's - all you will succeed in doing is making it sound like a wet fart and waste all your money. I know people who spent thousands on rockers, intake, bigger/twin throttle, exhaust, tune and they put their car on a dyno and it made 5rwkw more then stock.
I agree with TMM Mate, do you few little cheap things like has been said, air filter some diff gears maybe a shift kit etc, but dont try get power from an n/a v6. For the same or less money you could just get a blower or a turbo when your off your p's.

Id agree with the above and honestly just save ur $$ for a better performance car bit later on.
Btw in WA on P plates u can own/drive anything u want no restrictions
Hey mate best bang for your buck i reackon would be some diff gears and a lsd maybe look at 3,9s or 4,11s,
How do you reset the ECU in a VY? i can't find a thread for a VY anywhere
Thats some good advice there. Very good point ay you seriously will just waste all your money - there is ALWAYS money to be spent on your car learn from our mistakes and don't waste it.
Air intakes and the bigger TB are good, even better with a tune (again don't waste your money). The best thing you'll ever do is a major service - plugs, leads (no you don't need platinum spark plugs or msd coils), fuel filter, oil + filter change - clean your TB.
With your auto be careful about money wasteage there too a lot of transmission places will charge you an arm and a leg, I can recommend someone down drysdale its a fair drive even for me but its worth it he knows what he's on about. - If you want a hard shift spend the money and get a BILLET SERVO, the corvette servos people try and sell you are rubbish in comparison. I had one in my VR man that slammed into gear so hard. There are a lot of acceleration gains to be made with the correct work done to your auto.
Unsure if it's the same in VYs but in VR/VS's to reset the ECU just leave the battery leads off for 10 minutes or more, make sure you do that after you change oil, leads, intake, etc.
edit: Maces Cold Air Intake seems pretty good, if you don't want to spend that much just get a highflow panel filter they make a fair difference. (K&N, BMC, Lukey, etc)
To everyone else in this thread, I'm a bit clueless when it comes to what to do with my diff. What are the pros/cons of the different ratios?
nathans VY Calais - 'Calais 2.0' | VT Equipe | VS Calais **SOLD!**
Well since you are in Perth you have no restrictions right?
My best advice would be to sell your VY asap and buy a V8. Do not waste money on a V6 unless you slap a charger/turbo straight on.. even then it's questionable.
You could go the way every guy go's and go buy things such as
- full exhaust $1000
- k&n $100
- LSD $500
- Rockers $600
- intake $100
- Tune $60
after all those mods you will see very little gains $1200 later. If you have to keep the VY V6 get an LSD diff and go have some fun, dont waste your money on other things.
stop droolin
yes Diff and diff gearsdisconnect battery for 10 mins should reset
if you live neer maddington there is a diff guy around maddington tyre and suspension who is cheep![]()
fkford, I don't know if its just me, but my VY won't even get the wheels smoking, just drops its arse and revs to 2200rpm and nothing happens, whats going on there??? also is it bad for the transmission to lock it in the gears and drive it like a manual... I'm completely clueless about this... haven't been doing it but I've heard thats its not and that it is due to different gearing ratios???
get a performance chip, ss cold air induction, pacemaker extractors
I enjoy working on an NA v6. I enjoy the challenge of getting power from the old ecotec. id be aiming for a nice zippy little unit. drop in cam. exhaust, intake, better brakes and lsd
nope they drive great as ive got mates who have them on bone stockers only problem is that if you give too much boot off the line it loses traction very easy.but if you do highway a lot 4.11's arent great
haha so its apparent i should go roller rockers first by the looks of it so can anyone give me prices and info on where to go in perth ( closer to armadale as possible but willing to drive for results )
thanks
