Hi guys... might be trading cars today with another private seller... was just wondering what has to be done to transfer the registration into my name?
In Victoria, if they have a RWC then you just have to fill out the transfer forms as usual, and for the price put down what the car is worth. If they are unreg with no RWC then write out a receipt for both cars. If they are reg and don't have a RWC do the same for the unreg cars, but get the seller to send the plates back to vicroads. Then you have to rego it yourself.
I have no idea about other states, sorry. But they might be similar.
----------NSW Rego------------
The seller has to complete and sign the transfer on the back face of the registration papers to transfer the car to you.
Within 14 days you must attend the RTA with the completed rego papers to have the registration transfer processed and pay the stamp duty on the sale.(The RTA site has the % fee you will pay which is a % of purchase price or a % of their view of market value of the car). If you do not do this within 14 days of purchase they will hit you with another charge.
Before you buy make sure you do a REVS check on the car.
REVS for Cars
Make sure the seller has a current roadworthy pink slip for the car which is required under NSW law for all private sales of registered cars. If there is no current RW certificate the RTA is entitled to refuse to transfer the REGO to you after you have paid for the car (and you will have to go and get a roadworthy done on the car yourself.) They might not refuse but under the law they can if they choose to.
