I installed a aftermarket oil pressure gauge on my vy v6 using A brass T adapter and relevant sized thread adapter's. a few weeks ago i found a small oil leak which i tracked down to coming from the adapter connecting the T to the sump had cracked. When i got a chance to have a look at it i tried to unscrew the adapter and it snapped off flush to the sump. so i had to attach just the aftermarket sender to the sump and leave the factory unit unplugged.
now the Q's
1 nothing sounds or feels different when driving but I wanna know if it will cause damage if i don't have it connected?
2 What alternate fittings would be suggested? i.e Stainless, ally or attaching it elsewhere and where can i get them from.
and 3 which is a simple one. where do i get easy outs from lol
Any help would be greatly appreciated
1. no there will be do damage if there is oil in your car and the pump is working ok
2. brass is very strong it should have not cracked, mine has not and i have had if for over 4 years.
you can get a fitting that goes in where the oil filter goes and gives you something like 3 points for gauges and stuff
3. bunnings, total tools etc
i dunno why it cracked either. a mate put one on his hd and had no worries which is why i opted for the T rather then the plate behind the oil filter.
why will there be oil "in the car"? They are digital gauges. only a electrical wire runs through the firewall to the gauge itself. i didnt know they made ones you had to run a oil line into the car.
I was wondering if because I dont have the factory unit connected, is it gonna stuff my motor?
Thanks for your help mate. will rectify it asap
it wont stuff your motor. the sensor is only connected to the light on your dash. Nothing changes depending on the oil in your car, its temp, pressure etc. (unlike an o2 sensor in your exhaust adjusting your ignition)
basically youll just have to keep an eye on your gauge as there wont be any warning lights that your loosing pressure. main reason for running both the aftermarket and OEm sensor is so that you still have the light (or some connect to there own light, many use a mini shift light connected to the dash light to act as a warning light ) telling you when your loosing pressure. in a street car, most aftermarket gauges (except boost, A/F, fuel, tach etc) are purely ornimental
Cheers for that. I initially thought it was connected to the light on the dash but just wanted to be sure. I'd rather see fluctuations and loss in pressure from the gauge then wait till the light pops on and my pocket gets drained.
just remeber its going to fluctuat normally, increase when accelerating etc. After afew long drive youll see how it works.
Its common sense (not saying you dont have any common sense) but some people thing it works like a water temp meter, that its suppose to stay in one position etc
This reminds me of my old HT. It had a red temerature light on the dash that would come on after your motor was nicely cooked. Of course an aftermarket guage was called for in this curcumstance.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Thanks utester. I've been watching the guage since it happened and have noticed the normal pattern for oil pressures. 60psi when warming up at idle then 40ish when warm. around 60-70's when driving, more when given the boot![]()
