Default Crunching noise from rear wheel

Hi all, Just today i noticed a rather loud crunching noise coming from the rear right wheel. when i tried to jack the car up the wheel didn't leave the ground no matter how high i jacked it. I dropped it back down and noticed the car was on an angle (with the right side sitting higher than the left). First thoughts are the shock absorbers which ill start getting quotes for new shocks tomorrow, Unless anyone can tell me different?

Car jacked as high as my jack goes without the wheel leaving the ground:

    Thanks.

Na that's a touch higher than the standard jack. It doesn't look it in the photo but that is sitting pretty high up.

Is there any sign of dampness around the top of the inner tube on the shockie? Was the crunching sound occurring as you went over bumps? If the shockie has leaked oil past the seal, the shockie could be running dry and seizing, and now that you've jacked it up, the shockie has jammed.

hmm, i didn't notice any dampness but i was mainly checking for cracks or lose joints, and no not just over bumps. The noise occurs anytime the car is moving. Could it be the CV joint possibly?

I'm not familiar with the noise of a dud CV, but the fact you weren't able to clear the deck with the wheel, then the car stayed at an odd angle, tends to make me think of the shock first. It's really easy to remove so why not pull it out and see how it operates before spending any brass?

Is the shock absorber easy to remove? What do i need to remove to get to it? Discs? anything else?
From what i've been told, a dodgey CV joint makes the exact noise i was describing. I have a feeling it could be both shocks and cv joints that need replacing.

If It's anything like a ute, the rear shocky unbolts from the top and bottom very easily - you don't even need to take the wheel off.

That's correct. I think its a 17mm nut on the top mounting in the boot - just pull off the rubber cover to reveal the nut. You can undo it by retaining the centre shaft with a small open ender (somewhere around 8 - 10mm) and releasing the retaining nut.

The bottom mounting is a single bolt about 19mm. You can access it behind the wheel as stated above, without having to remove the wheel.

Well that sounds simple enough, and definantly does need doing.

Just curious, can anyone tell me what i need to remove/move to get the CV out?
