I have an aerial that I believe has a broken rope....The motor sounds normal but the aerial doesnt go up or down....I read the previous posts on this forum regarding replacing the mast and did purchase one from Supercheap auto for $35.......When I went to remove the old mast I struck some problems....
Firstly I removed the tyre and plastic covering to get access to the aerial motor...I them removed the plastic mould around the wheel arch that holds the aerial in place....After that I unscrewed the chrome sleeve and thats it........I could not see anything else which I could remove in order to get the old mast of....
Can anyone tell me what else I needed to do in order to remove the old mast.....
I wanted to remove the entire assembly but then found that the wire from the radio aerial was stopping me.....How do I remove this wire from the aerial.....
I basically spent a couple of hours in frustration...Any advice would be greatly appreciate..
Thanks
I replaced the aerial in my monaro last week, it will be the same process as yours tho.
The black cable can be removed from the passenger side foot well (kick pannel). If you remove this the cable can be removed and the whole assemble can be taken out.
The aerial motor is mounted to the inner body panel by one captive 13mm bolt which is easy to see from under the wheel arch. You also need to unplug the earth wire for the aerial, which is connected to the body just above the mounting bracket bolt. You don't need to remove the chromed nut until the aerial is out. You have to remove the whole motor assembly because the snapped-off bottom end of the drive cable will still be sitting inside the spool at the bottom of the motor assembly.
Remove the inner kick panel by:
1.Unclip the oval shaped insert in the door sill trim
2. Unscrew the first two or three screws retaining the door sill trim to the sill
3. Removing the screw retaining the kick panel trim to the side panel under the glovebox
4. Unclip the dash lower panel below the glove box - it''s just held on by two plastic clips and simply pulls down off the clips.
You will now have access to disconnect the aerial connector under the glovebox and the power aerial wiring connector. The aerial can then be pulled out through the wheel arch. Be careful as you pull the wiring through - there is a grommet that needs to come out with the aerial wiring.
Rope/mast can be removed and replaced without removing the aerial mechanism from car (via wheel well)
Unclip the black plastic trim
remove old mast/rope by grabbing with needle nose pliers and pushing 'up' on aerial control (or turning radio on if semi-auto type)
insert new mast and push down on aerial control
Obviously this is a two person task as the aerial control needs to be operated whilst manually feeding the new mast...
Can you explain for me how your method gets out the broken off piece of the drive cable that will be sitting down in the drum of the motor? If you use your method, you are only pulling out the top section of the cable with the mast, then stuffing a new mast and drive cable down into the aerial with the old stub of the cable, usually about 100-150 mm long, still in there.
As you correctly point out - this only works if the rope comes out intact - as it did when my mast was snapped.
As the OP stated 'broken rope' he is outta luck on this simpler method, but I thought this may be of interest to some...
i paid autobarn $120 = $80 labour + $40 part. to do mine cause i knew it was a bitch to do.
if you have an automatic antenna, can you swap it to a manual with out to much stuffing around.
I had to pull the stereo circuit out to stop the motor on the antenna going off its nut
The teeth on the ribbon was stripped.
