    Default A Few Questions.

hi im steev i just turned 20 and bought my dream car. i joined this site about 3 mins ago and there are a few things i want to know.

    about a month ago i bought myself an 03 R8 II 6sp

reasons for buying.. i like holdens... i like v8's... and its the best looking holden v8 ever made (in my opinion)

but there is soo much i dont know about it and instead of searching for hours on end to find what i want to know i figured y not join and ask the professionals? YOU GUYS other holden lovers who have been in my situation haha.

    1. being the larger brakes what is the smallest rim i can fit on it and what are cheap tyres to fit (yes because im a wanker and like burnouts) atm its got $475 dunlop sport maxx on and they are great. the cheapest i got quoted for new tyres were $180 (bit much for 3 mins of "fun")

    2. i want to get a varex catback variable sound exhaust system i want to know if anybody has one of these or knows anybody with one on their car.. does it sound anygood?

3.a. under brakes it shudders a little bit u feel it in the car but cant really feel it through the steering wheel.. or the gearstick my first thought was warped rotors of course but ppl say it could be something with the abs
3.b. if it is warped rotors can you get them machined (they are drilled) also guestimation on cost?

    4. braking at lower speeds <35kms there is a squeek coming from the brakes first thing i checked was the meat on the pads.. there was plenty.. one person told my it could be a sticky caliper/pad (which could also explain the shudder) another told me glazed pads and all i had to do was take them off and give them a sand.. any other ideas or personal experiences?

    5. its stock power and i already am annoyed with it loosing grip if i just want to "take off" i have big power plans for this car over say the next 5 years and i was wondering what is the cost/relevance of mini tubbing (is it worth doing to a everyday driver)

there are loads more things i want to know but cannot think of il leave you all with these and see the help i get before i bombard the rest at ya

i dont have any pics yet as i lost the cord for my camera devo'd but if u want to see i can show u on webcam through my window haha

thats about it for now all comments are appreciated.

I'd hope your doing those "burnouts" on a legal drag strip. Shame about the R8.. feel sorry for its next owner.

I'm sorry for your laziness. Maybe spend a few minutes with the search button and you may find most of your questions answered.

    Agree with that.

    Steve

If you continue to blow your money on burnouts the next thing you will lose is the differential. IF the cost of tyres worries you then wait until you wreck a diff and you will be up for big money. Then there is the gearbox which will not take abuse. More big dollars.

The squeak from the brakes will most likely be due to noisy brake pads. If the correct pods are used you will not get a squeak. If cheap pads have been fitted these can be noisy.

Most Vys have some brake shudder and this is due to warping of the rotors or the rotors not sitting perfectly in alignment on their mounting positions or both. Machining the rotors should cure most of the symptoms. This will cost about $50 per rotor including removal and refitting. You will eventually need to replace rotors and I am told the OE front rotors are quite expensive for HSV vehicles.

    Agree with this comment
As Sean880 has explained, the money from wrecking your car through thrashing/abusing will eventually add up to more than the car is worth. I had to replace the diff on my old VS because I thrashed it - $600. My trans went - another $900. Suddenly I've just spent over half the value of the car on fixing things that were probably perfect to start with. I now take care of my VY, I don't thrash it, I respect it. I recommend you take care of this car, do it up, make it great and be proud of it as most of us do here on JustCommodores.... I think you should buy a paddock basher to do your burnouts, even if it's a old VT SS, and save your nice R8 to show off

Hey mate! I got a 03 VYII R8 sedan like a month ago! Its tuned to 265rwkw. Don't listen to these guys, they are just jealous... lol. I use 245/35/18's for the drag strip as they have more grip and lay out some mad rubber! They just fit over the brakes too. With the shutter, its definately warped rotors, just machine them its cheap. Mate jump on the HSV forum and we'll sort you out...

ok i see where u r all getting at and i think i came across with the wrong attutide.. i have not yet done anything more than a tiny screech... i LOVE this car and treat it with the upmost respect i rarely floor it, wash it 2 times a week.. i even nearly killed a bird coz it landed on the roof... stupid bird. what i was implying it i want to go to the drags at eastern creek etc and more importantly summernats! 1 to show off my awesome sexy looking car and also to race and have some fun in my machine.
what is the point of buying a big powerful car if ur not going to use it ?

also.. the car came with a full service history and i went through every one and it has never had the brakes changed. so that leads me to believe they are factory.

mate firstly iv got nothing to be jealous of, and secondly iv got an SS not a poxy 6..

im not against anyone doing burnouts as long as its on a legal drag strip where you cant damage or hurt anyone or anything other than yourself.. especially considering he is only 20 years old.. (which mind you he shouldn't even be driving an R8 on his P's, but id be a hypocrite because i had the SS on my P's ). But I personally wouldn't do burnouts because it wears the crap outta every nut and bolt in your car and you'd be forking out the $$$ for nothing!

But anyway its your car to do as you please, good luck with your clubby, let us know what MODS end up on it!

    cheers
