Default VY Steering column upper bearing

    Hi guys,

I am new to Just Commodores & need some help. There possibly has already been a thread that has dealt with this so if there has been just tell me.

My VY Lumina steering wheel can now be pulled up & down in the steering column even with the lock lever underneath locked down in place. So when the wheel is pushed down into the column, the wheel has very little sideways movement but when it's pulled out of the column then the wheel can be moved from side to side quite a bit.

I pulled the plastic covers off the steering column to try & look into the mechanism & it looks like the upper bearing may have collapsed.

Is this a common problem?? Is it easy to repair?? What is the procedure?? Does the wheel need to come off & how do you deal with the airbag if it does??

Please help me!! It is too dangerous to drive.

you'll at least need to remove the steering wheel and clock spring. Airbag I think you have to take the fuse out at least and it unbolts fromt he back of the steering wheel before you pul the wheel off.

Y es . .............. Do not mess with your steering mechanism when you are not familiar with the set up or the possible fault. It's much too dangerous an area for the untrained to be tinkering with.

Take the car to a Holden dealer or to a competent mechanic that is familiar with later model commodores.

Just wondering if you ended up getting this fixed? If you took it to Holden/mechanic, how much did it cost?
