Hi all, im thinking of getting this trans cooler off ebay
AUTO TRANSMISSION COOLERS - eBay V8, Performance Parts, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 10-Sep-10 08:57:04 AEST)
first off, does the trans pump fluid into the bottom of the tank and then out the top on the side of the radiator and also what size thread is the holes on the tank? im thinking of disconnecting the line that comes from the trans to the radiator (the quick link that's white which then goes to rubber tube then a steel pipe) at the bottom and running a new hose to the trans cooler then back to the radiator and from the radiator the the trans? Would this be the correct way? Any other suggestions welcome. cheers
When I connected my trans cooler, I bypassed the radiator, if you get a leak in the stock cooler which is in the radiator you can get coolant in the transmisson. That will almost certainly stuff it... I can't see the need for both of the coolers... good insurance IMHO
Depends on your cooler size.
Ideally, you'd run into the main radiator trans core and then into the secondary cooler and then back to the trans. This is due to the fact that there is already a perfectly good core doing cooling, may as well make it do the majority of the cooling first. You run the 2nd cooler after the main one as there is going to be more heat in the main radiator that the 2ndary one.
If you have an uber cooler, your better offf running a thermostat setup to avoid the trans running ice-cold fluid all the time. Like oil, trans fluid has a standard operating temp. It needs to stay at that rather than thick cold fluid all the time, hence a thermo setup will allow it to reach temp and then open into additional cooling as required.
Thanks,
aZk.
cheers for your input guys, i also asked some bloke from natrad round the corner and he said to run it from the trans to the cooler then the radiator so the oil has a little heat before it goes back into the trans, said something about it runs better this way cause its a little warmer. also what tools and wear did you connect your lines and where about did you feed the cable through to connect it to the trans cooler?
not good to bypass the rad altogether it's there not only to cool but also to warm. it helps bring the trans up to operating temp in winter. i'd be inclined to go tran>rad>cooler>trans. but what the trans bloke said makes sense as well either way your doing the trans a big favour.
